Anyone stayed at Prospect Reef in Tortola lately?
It sure looks good on paper, but I've seen some posts at tripadvisor.com that suggest it has really gone downhill. However I have noticed that most of the posts on any resort at that site tend to be negative and wonder if it's just a gripe-type board. Anyone here have up-to-date info??

tigerhawk, I stayed at Prospect Reef 1.5 years ago (I was there during the Sept 11 attacks). I will be happy to answer any questions on it.<BR><BR>If you go to Prospect Reef expecting luxury, you will be sorely disappointed. I have stayed at MUCH nicer hotels/resorts in the Mayan Riviera, Puerto Rico and St. John, but I still liked Prospect Reef because it was a great base to get to know the BVI's. In the week that we were there we were able to spend a day in Anegada, one in Jost Van Dyke, one in Tortola, and we also took two day-long boat snorkeling trips (The Indians and the Caves) and the Rhone and Cooper Island. They offered different day-trips every day.<BR><BR>We also spend two lovely days at their small 'beach club' located on Peter Island (NOT to be confused with Peter Island Resort). We snubaed on those two days - it was great because the reef is very close to the beach club. The food at the resort and at the beach club was great and the staff was very nice. I thought the rates were reasonable for the BVIs.<BR><BR>The downside? The rooms, although spacious, need updating and they don't have a beach on-site (although the seapools are fine for spending a few hours).<BR><BR>Overall, we had a really great time and would recommend it to anyone who wants to see/do different things in the BVIs, but is not looking for luxury. just out of curiosity, I checked tripadvisor and read the bad review. Its very funny! I guess I should say that there ARE roosters roaming Prospect Reef (and Tortola in general). If chickens and roosters are a turn you off then, this resort is definitely not for you.

Thanks - I had the same impression of the review that you did. I've seen chickens, goats, etc roaming many islands - that's just the way life is in the Caribbean. <BR><BR>I too have stayed in everything from the Four Seasons Hualalai in Hawaii, to Superclubs in Jamaica, to the Divi in Bonaire, and the Travelodge in Key Largo - luxury is less important than location, safety, and something that meets my needs at that particular trip. Just want a base to explore, thought the all-inclusive package that AAVacations is selling for Prospect Reef was reasonably priced, and I've never stayed [altho I have visited] in the BVI.<BR><BR>Thanks for your more reasonable take on the situation.

Since Prospect Reef has reopened its Dolphin Swim project with 4 new dolphins you may want to reconsider - or not. Some of the units have been redone - the ones hawked for the timeshare sales - and some, as reported, are in poor condition. You do realize that they are not on a beach I am sure. Maybe Mariarosa can claify if the the $75 fee per person per day is the charge for the use of the facilities on Peter Island including transportation and food - it is unclear. <BR>

KaribIslander - $75 sounds quite steep. When I was there it was $20 and it included transportation to the island and a lovely 3-course lunch. They also go at night and you ca have a 5-course dinner out in the island - maybe that is what is $75?<BR><BR>tigerhawk - we were on the all-inclusive package and it was worth it even though we were never at the resort during the day. It includes a lot of nice extras - like a spa treatment (the spa girl was super) and snuba. It also included some of the tours we took (Jost and Indians/Caves) and the trips to their beach club (including lunch and drinks). We also bought it through AA Vacations. <BR><BR>I imagine Prospect Reef would be comparable to the Divi or the Travelodge. <BR><BR>The BVIs are awesome and if you want to island hop and explore around, I think Prospect Reef is a good place because they have a marina and offer different excursions and also you are at the edge of Road Town to catch the ferry to Virgin Gorda. If you want a full-fledge resort with an awesome room to hang out for an entire week, then you need to look elsewhere, but based on what you

As with Mariarosa, I found PR to be perfectly adequate as a base from which to explore the BVI. Aside from their Peter Is club junkets, I would seek other alternatives to their offerings for Day Sails, Beach Trips, Day Trips to other islands. These are all very easily booked independently and PR loads a substantial surcharge.<BR><BR>Though not luxurious,I found the rooms to be fine. I would suggest a car rental for a few days for exploring Tortola and getting to the beaches. Give your self a full day for ferry trips to VG or JVD.<BR><BR>Have a ball<BR>Dave

Stayed at Prospect Reef a few years ago. Also stayed, like previous posters, as a base just to sleep. Ask for the upper floor which has cathedral ceilings and a balcony with an ocean view. It was an extremely simple room, bed with mosquito net, small refrigerator, and ok bathroom with funny water. Nice breeze with windows on both sides of the room open at night and, yes, the roosters to greet you in the a.m. I thought it was a nice, real country living touch. PR is close to town and the charter sailing which we did during mid-week. Nice little cabana spa treatments on the shore rocks, too.
