Niagara Falls Trip
Hi, I would appreciate advice. My husband and I are planning to take our 2 daughters -age 14 and 10 -- to visit the Falls. I have never been. He was there as a very small child. We were thinking of staying at the Embassy Suites. What are the must-see's and how many days would you allow? I would like to make a day trip outside the immediate falls area as well and would appreciate advice. We are from the NY city area and have travelled with our children many times. They are good sports and appreciate history and good food. Thanks for your advice.

Will you have a car? African Lion Safari is worth a visit, and it is perhaps an hour away.
Butterfly conservatory and Maid of the Mist are good places for kids.
Official Canadian food for kids -- Swiss Chalet quarter chicken dinner with fries; poutine at Haqrvey's (fast food place); donuts at Tim Horton's. Everything else foodwise is prettymuch the same as in the USA.

A stop at Fort George in Niagara on the Lake would be worthwhile if you are interested in history.

Niagara on the Lake itself is a very picturesque town with lots to choose from in terms of restaurants. Downtown there are sidewalk/patio restaurants like ZeeZees, the Buttery and the Shaw Cafe. There are also artisans and galleries....Trisha Romance has converted her former home into a charming gallery.

If the four of you are at all interested in touring vineyards and/or a winery to see how wine is made, there are dozens of wineries in the area. Some also have wonderful restaurants overlooking vineyards, which might be a new experience---even though the girls can't indulge in a glass of wine, we often see families at wineries.
The Butterfly Conservatory is really lovely, and I would recommend spending time there, as has been already recommended. The Welland Canal could also be interesting for your family.

But if you don't already have plans to see Toronto, then you can actually do a day trip there since it's only 1.5 hrs from Niagara Falls and would offer all kinds of interesting things to see and do---and great restaurants.

Try the driving tour that takes you from Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake. 20 or so stops along the way and lots of information. www.cargoaudiotours.com

I would certainly add the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) to that list......

It would involve much more driving, and it all depends on how many days you're visiting the Falls.
Depending on your daughter's interests, and maturity, you might also consider seeing a play at the Shaw Festival, though I think Saint Joan is likely the only one that might appeal to them.

A falls trip should include the standards... Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, Whirlpool JetBoats, the Niagara Gorge... You can add Imax, a walk up Clifton Hill, Fort George and the US Fort Niagara... Buffalo offers tours that include Frank Lloyd Wright's Larkin House complex and the Underground railroad... there are recorded CD tours of the Niagara Region and also the Power Plants for the history of Electricity....
Toronto is 70 minutes from Niagara and you can fit a lot into an overnight stay... Consider the CN Tower...Queen St. W... several galleries and museums... its worth the trip with good planning..
as far as food, consider the Keg as Ok food(its in your hotel, wolfgang Puck is down the street and then 20 minutes away are the wineries...excellent food can be had at Peller, Hildebrand, On the Twenty, Strewn, Penninsula Ridge, Vineland, More casual are Old Angel Inn, The old Winery(Rt.55) East Dell, and several of the village stops mentioned above... Have fun
