Melbourne and 2013 Tennis, where to stay, neighborhoods/transport

Thinking about 3 weeks in January, should we check a Craig's List, see many apts. in Home Away but don't know good neighborhoods for relaxation/amenities. Will get tix in advance and do tennis a few days, then putter about. Probably hit GBReef en route.
Would love your thoughts.
We have a 2 BR villa in Sedona, wonder if we could exchange? VRBO what else?

Craig's List isn't big here, Gumtree is the same kind of community noticeboard for this part of the world: http://melbourne.gumtree.com.au/

The public transport in Melbourne is really good so most inner city areas will probably suit you. I like Brunswick and around Gertrude St.

Sabbatical Homes is another possibility for swaps, house sitting, retnting: http://sabbaticalhomes.com/

There is one I have heard about called Home Exchange, I reckon with a place in Sedona you'd have a very good chance of swapping accommodation.

Forget Craigs List. Try TripAdvisor or VRBO.

January is in the middle of the wet season up north, you can still go of course but be aware - it will be hot, humid and wet. Very different in Melbourne where the tennis is, it will probably be hot but we have a dry heat.

Stick close to the city area, public transport in the outer suburbs is woeful. Maybe CBD (central business district), St Kilda, Carlton, Richmond, Hawthorn.

I agree with KayF. Stay in CBD if possible. That will get you easy access to the tennis and lots of great restaurants. St. Kilda and Carlton will be easy access as well. Carlton is more upscale then St. Kilda. Richmond and Hawthorn will be a little farther but very doable but will add about 20 minutes to access to the best restaurants.

I got my place in Melbourne through Sabbatical Homes and am very satisfied. But I am here for 3 months.

Richmond is the district next to the Tennis centre. We walk to that precinct from Richmond.
Hawthorn is definitely the furtherest away if you want close
