Wanted Krabi ... Changing to Koh Samui area instead. Suggestions?
Hi there - I was hoping to travel to Krabi in August but it seems that's a bad time with the rain and much safer bet is on eastern beaches.
I'd love some suggestions for Koh Samui or other nearby islands. We don't want super touristy or crowded. We don't dive but like snorkeling with some jungle and beach. Any suggestions of towns to stay? Or places to stay?
Any guidance much appreciated

Koh Samui itself does not offer any good snorkeling but the nearby(1 & 1/2 hour by speed boat) islands like Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan does have very good snorkeling areas. No jungle on Samui either and the best beach on Samui is quite crowded.
You could instead stay on Koh Tao or Koh Nang Yuan itself. I have stayed and like this resort on Koh Nang Yuan: http://www.nangyuan.com/

If you like the quiet then head to Koh Phangan(45 min boat ride from Koh Samui).Beaches are good. Not much of surf great for diving & snorkelling.Stayed at Green Papaya in Haad Salad.

The only night life is the full moon & half moon parties in Haad Rin which goes on all night, doped & dancing to deafening trance, drunk teens sprawled on the beach could well be avoided.Otherwise, peace reigns on the rest of the island.

another easy alternative is hua hin with no flight required and weather is decent most of the year...
the hyatt is really nice and there is a new intercontinental hotel there and a sheraton up the road a bit

I loved Krabi when I went there last August. Sure, there is a possibility of rain, but I wouldn't NOT go, if that's where you had hoped to go. It doesn't rain all the time. You may or may not have showers. We had a gorgeous day for island hopping by speedboat! There are lots of longtail boat tours available as well.
I loved the 'forest' areas there. Krabi just seems more natural than other much more tourisy beach places, although, yes, there are tourists there. I'm not a snorkeler or swimmer so I don't know about what marine life you'd see, if you would go by boat to the islands off shore on a day trip. I saw snorkelers out in the water though.
If you opt for Koh Samui (I hope to go there in a month) I would pick a place close to, but not along, Chaweng Beach. Crystal Bay Resort is on its own mostly private beach. No pool. Very reasonable. Walkable to Cliff Restaurant (which is excellent) but by motorbike or tsongtau (truck taxi) to other beach areas. It's easy to hop a ride as the tsongtaus go by all the time, and the taxi cabs as well. Or you could rent a vehicle. Just be careful!
