Transit time...

**I posted this in the airline section but thought some of you would have great advice on this issue**

My husband will be flying in on Singapore airlines into SIN arriving at 11:50am. He has a flight on JetStar at 13:50 going to Phuket. He will be in 1st class so he can get off the plane fast and will not have any checked luggage so he can run.

In your experience...will he make it to the JetStar check in desk by 13:00 (1:10 to get from one place to the next)?

The budget airlines are in a separate terminal at Changi. So he will not just go from gate to gate, but will have to change terminals. I think an hour is cutting it awfully close, especially since departure times at Changi are often the times the plane actually leave the ground, the gate closes 20-30 minutes before that.

Thanks Kathie! I checked which terminal Jetstar goes out and it isn't the budge one like Tigerair and AirAsia. Does that make a difference...do you think?

I always trust your advice...I think i was you who turned us onto Face Bar in BKK. We now make that a MUST everytime in BKK.

If Jetstar doesn't go into the budget terminal, he's more likely to make it. You might call the airline and find out what the minimum connection time is. SIngapore is in a terminal with no (or few) other flights, but if it isn't the budget terminal he has to go to, then it will be closer.

In GENERAL, I would say he would be OK, but I have a few questions and comments:

1. Where is he flying in from? If he is long haul from the US, the chance of that flight being late in arriving is quite rare, IMO. Those flights rarely take off late (you aren't waiting for the aircraft to arrive) and if they do, can make up time in the air. However, if he is arriving from a destination within Asia, like Hong Kong, he may indeed be late. So that would be the first thing to know.

2. Will he definitely have his boarding pass for his Jet Star flight before he lands (i.e. will Singapore Airlines issue him a board pass when he checks in for his Singapore Airlines flight?) I don't know that Singapore Air will issue him a boarding pass for Jet Star. That means your husband will have to go to the "transfer" desk when he lands and get a boarding pass for the Phuket flight. There could potentially be quite a line for this. Hard to say, I have sometimes waited 20 minutes or so in these lines. There probably will be at least a few people. Also, if he is not familiar with the airport and does not know where to go to find the transfer counters, this will slow him down a bit. For info on transit/transfer at Changi, go to http://www.changiairport.com/changi/..._guide/transit. (Note that he will not go to the "check in" desk for Jetstar, i.e. he won't go through Immigration and out to the departure area and the main check-in area, he will stay inside the transfer area before Immigration and go to the transfer desk to get his boarding pass.)

3. SQ flights arrive into Terminal 2 (and from about mid-Jan, will also land at Terminal 3, if he is coming from the US, he should land in Terminal 3). From what I can see, all JetStar flights will go out of Terminal 1. He will have to take the train between terminals (or really walk fast), so he will need some time for this.

If the answer to above is (1) arrival from local Asian airport, and (2) no onward boarding pass, I would not take a chance on that short a layover. Otherwise, I think he should be OK, but of course one never knows.

For what it is worth, I can see that the Jetstar flight to Phuket took off a half hour late yesterday, so that may also give some breathing room. You can check the schedule to see the on-time record. (Might want to do that with the SQ flight he is on into Changi too.) also note that Jetstar seems to have many different departure times for its flights to Phuket (from 14:10 to 19:35, so make sure that your time is right for the day your husband arrives – also make sure you have the right arrival day that your husband will arrive into Singapore, as he will arrive a day later in Singapore than the day he left, if not 2 days later depending on where he departs from and if he has a layover somewhere. People get this wrong often.)

Great questions Cicerone:

Answers:
1. Flight is coming from US (SFO)
2. I will have to work on the boarding pass issue...p.s. found out he is flying Tiger and not Jetstar...so he is flying out of the budget terminal
3. He knows the SIN airport well and is a very savvy traveler.

Even though I am not sure this will all go smooth...but he assures me it will work. Well...guess he'll figure it out if he doesn't.

Thanks again for all your help!

Flying on Tiger Air, he will not have his boarding pass in advance, and will have to clear immigration and customs before going over to the budget terminal for the Tiger Air flight. Provided he is on time (without flight delay), super speedy, there is no line at immigration, and no wait for the shuttle to the budget terminal he should make it.

If he misses the flight on Tiger Airways, he will have to buy another ticket on whatever airline. Tiger Air will not offer any compensation or flexibility at all if the flight is missed for any reason.

Given all of the aditional info, I'd suggest he schedule a later flight to Phuket.
