I will be in Phuket from Dec. 28 to Jan. 1. I'm on a budget, but what are the "Must Do's?" Anything to avoid? I couldn't get a direct flight from Bangkok to Phuket, so I have a 4 hour layover in Samui. Anything worth seeing near the airport.

Can't think of any must sees. Phuket is a beach location, not much of a cultural experience. Relax! Avoid Patong beach area unless you want to go there just for a walk-thru and maybe some shopping. Patong has too many touts.
I agree... routing thru Samui??? What's that about!!

Unbelievable routing aside, the Samui airport has a rather charming small shopping mall attached to it. There's a Jim Thompson store, a few cafes, restaurants and places offering massage.
In Phuket, I consider a tour of Phang Nga Bay a "must do". You can do it on a regular boat, or by sea canoe. I prefer the sea canoe because they'll take you into the caves that lead into hidden lakes.
