Flights to US require checkin & baggage drop off 60min ahead of scheduled departure.
If (Big IF)
a) you are checked in (incl passport check) on LX before your flight INTO Zurich, and
b) bags are automatically transferred from WK to LX or you only have carryon.
then maybe you have a chance. Zurich is not a big airport.
I believe Swiss owns Edelweiss, so it is possible you can check-in and tag your bags all the way through to JFK when you first check-in with WK. I do not know that for sure.
What you can do is ask Edelweiss agent for help getting you to your LX flight immediately after you depart the 1st flight. They may be able to escort you through the airport.

Looks like you will have to clear passport control:

There seems to be no map on the airport website, but based on the relevant wiki article it looks like you will change "piers" (set of gates). That is a connection time I would be reluctant to accept for a domestic flight, never mind international.

All flights to the US need to clear passport control at the departure gate, in addition to check by the airline at check-in.
This is not unique to Zurich.
If your family is fast moving & you've already booked your flights then I'd say you can make it (see my IF's above).
If your family is the type to take a bathroom break on the way, have mobility issues, need to take time to get your act together, browse in the gift shop, or otherwise slow you down then your risk of missing the JFK flight gets higher.
Is there a later LX flight you could take if you do miss the connection?

Edelweiss sounds like it part of the Sound of Music but the Internet tells me it is based in Zurich and is part of the Lufthansa group. Maybe you will be checked all the way through to NYC which will give you the second boarding pass and take care of your luggage. Zurich is a major international airport and if you have to reclaim your luggage, recheck and go through security, you and/or your bags may not make it in 60 minutes from touchdown. Why not try to get in touch with the airline issuing the tickets to find out more clearly?
