Dover Street Market

Murray Hill

The New York location is one of only two U.S. outposts of Rei Kawakubo's Dover Street Market (the other is in Los Angeles, with additional stores in London, Paris, Tokyo, Singapore, and Beijing). It's basically a multilevel fashion emporium: each floor hosts miniboutiques from high-end labels including Prada, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Alaïa, and Comme Des Garçons, alongside less well-known designers and street wear. The seven-story building is worth a look just for the people-watching. The in-house Rose Bakery is the perfect spot to refuel with a casual gourmet lunch or brunch.

Dovetail

Vintage and handmade pieces that run the gamut from kitschy to avant garde make this store feel nostalgic and timeless at once. Owner Julie Ghatan scours estate sales and flea markets to salvage those perfect items worth an (often modest) investment. The jewelry is the main draw, but clothing, accessories, and barware are equally noteworthy.

Downing Hawaii

Kaimuki

Claiming to be the oldest surf shop in Hawaii, the store carries old-style Birdwell surf trunks here, along with popular labels, such as Quiksilver, Roxy, Dakine, and Billabong, which supplement Downing's own line of surf wear and surfboards.

Downtown at The Gardens

This open-air pavilion down the street from The Gardens Mall has boutiques, chain stores, a grocery store, day spas, a 16-screen movie theater, and a lively restaurant and nighttime bar scene that includes the Yard House, which stays open late. A carousel, children's barbershop, boutiques, and Cool Beans (an indoor playground) make this a family-friendly mall.

Downtown Books

With strong local support, this enduring mainstay has survived hurricane flooding to stock an admirable collection of literature on the Outer Banks, cuisine, history, nature, lighthouses, shipwrecks, and folklore, as well as related fiction. Local author readings are frequent. The owners operate a sister store in Duck, Duck's Cottage, that's also a coffee shop.

Downtown Design District

Known for its array of fine antiques shops, galleries, lighting showrooms, and interior design boutiques, the Downtown Design District is worth a visit. Stop in some of Savannah's trendier fashion stores, many of them housed in charming historic storefronts. Nearby are the famed Mercer Williams House and the landmark Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room, known for some of the area's best family-style Southern food. The picturesque surrounding neighborhoods are also enjoyable for a nice afternoon stroll.

Downtown Gulfport

It's hard to believe that this vibrant waterfront enclave between St. Pete Beach and St. Petersburg proper was once a blighted fishing village. Today, Beach Boulevard, its main thoroughfare, is home to a good many locally owned boutiques, galleries, and eclectic eateries. There's an Art Walk every first Friday and third Saturday of the month, a farmers' market every Tuesday, and lots of other cool events throughout the year.

Droid Depot

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Here you can build your very own droid, on a miniature scale at least. Upon arriving, choose between a BB-series (like BB-8) or R-series (like R2-D2), then select your own color scheme and accessories. Once built, droids can communicate with one another using Bluetooth technology or be driven by their owners with a remote control. Note that droids aren't cheap (prices start at $119.99), and, without a reservation made on the My Disney Experience app, expect a wait just to enter the store.

Dry Creek General Store

For breakfasts, sandwiches, bread, cheeses, and picnic supplies, stop by the general store, established in 1881 and a popular spot to hang out on the porch or in the bar (which stays open into the evening). Beer, wine, and artisanal sodas, ciders, and juices are for sale.

The Dry Dock

The Dry Dock offers clothing, gifts, and accessories (many made of Deer Isle granite) and is described by owner Janet Chaytor as “a creative department store.” That may be overstating the size a tad, but it's understandable given the shop's penchant for hand-carved platters, funky (and locally forged) jewelry, and tote bags hailing images of the area. You won't leave uninspired.
