Derby Pottery

Garden District

Fragments of wrought iron work and other architectural details form the inspiration for many of Mark Derby's beautiful pottery pieces, from mugs and vases to handmade Victorian reproduction tiles. His clocks and plaques, fashioned from reproductions of New Orleans's historic Art Deco water-meter covers, have earned cult popularity, and his reproductions of letter tiles found on Crescent City street corners can be spotted all over town.

Desert General

This contemporary take on the old-timey general store opened in 2022 and stocks an eclectic array of gourmet food, books, games, novelties, and canvas desert hats. It also sells household necessities including a lot of environmentally friendly cleaning supplies and sustainable everyday items. In addition, it emphasizes local vendors and community involvement through collaborations and exhibits. While you're here, check out other occupants of Corner 62, a renovated retail complex, such as Scorpion Lollipop (candy/gifts), Pisces (swimwear), and The Moon and the Mat (yoga studio).

Desert Island Comics

The sign above the storefront says Sparacino’s bakery, but the shop is actually home to a comic book utopia. Desert Island packs all kinds of illustrated media into the small shop, from kids' books to graphic novels and zines. You might find a rare vintage comic book or discover new work by a neighborhood graphic artist.

Recommended Fodor's Video

Desert Thread

Small-town yarn shops are as scarce as hen's teeth, and this one is especially sweet. Run by sisters Cathy and Rosie, it offers a wide selection of beautiful yarn, from fancy to simple, as well as needles, finished pieces, jewelry, and books. If you're sticking around the area for a while, you can sign up for a class or attend the weekly group knit night.

Design Archives Emporium

Downtown

You won't make it far through this maze of vintage, handmade, and local craft dealers without something catching your eye, possibly an antique ceramic animal, pair of statement earrings, or a T-shirt that reads "I Kinda Like Greensboro." A smaller curation of interesting objects is open to browse next door on weekends, while a second store serves Winston-Salem shoppers at  636 W. 4th St.

Design Warehouse

The Plaza

A welcome antidote to Santa Fe's preponderance of shops selling Native American and Spanish-colonial antiques, Design Warehouse carries hip, contemporary furniture, kitchenware, home accessories, and other sleek knickknacks, including vaunted brands like Alessi, Knoll, and Normann Copenhagen. Note the select collection of books and magazines focusing on art and design.

Designing Wahine Emporium and Hale Zen

This Upcountry haven is a shopper's delight of beach luxe, wrapped in aloha, and sprinkled with zen. Featuring Hawaiian merchandise and Balinese imports, you'll find endless gift options like authentic aloha shirts, jams and jellies, children's clothes and books, bath and beauty products, and home decor. Destiny USA

Syracuse's top tourist attraction is its 1.6-million-square-foot Carousel Center Mall. And it's getting even bigger. A project is underway to nearly double the size of the mall, part of a new 75-million-square foot "green" retail complex called Destiny USA.

Detroit Eastern Market

Farmers and city-slickers alike have gathered in the historic open-air Detroit Eastern Market since 1841 to bargain and barter over fresh produce, meats and cheeses, fish, and plants. Public shopping hours in the sprawling market, which is spread over 43 acres, start Saturday at 6 am. Stores stay open until 5 pm; open-air markets shut down by 4 pm, though the best stock is long gone by the afternoon.

Devils Tower Trading Post

At the entrance to Devils Tower National Monument, you can purchase informative books, Western art, buffalo hides, clothing, knickknacks, and souvenirs. A giant Harley-Davidson flag (supposedly the world's largest) flies over the store, so it's no wonder that bikers overrun the place during the massive Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August. The old-fashioned ice-cream parlor, which also serves a mean sarsaparilla, is a treat in the heat of summer.

Di Bruno Bros.

Bella Vista

The first location of the famed specialty cheese shop, this Di Bruno’s looks laughably tiny compared with the enormous branches in Center City and the suburbs. Slight in size though it may be—it’s long, narrow, and cavelike, with salamis hanging from the ceiling like stalactites—it's absolutely jam-packed with all the specialties you expect from la famiglia. Peruse all the cheeses, oils, antipasti, and charcuterie you want, comforted by the assurance that the gregarious employees behind the counter will always break you off samples.

Different Drummer

This boutique shop has been a mainstay in Wickford Village since 1971, selling a wide variety of local crafts, stationery, glassware, pottery, and quirky gift items. It's a delight just to stroll around and admire the collection of unique and curious goods packing every shelf, and while you can spend hundreds on some one-of-a-kind items, the shop isn't so precious as to eschew a few $10 touristy trinkets, too.

Dinosaur Designs

SoHo

The jewelry and housewares designs at this small, Australian-owned brand are inspired by nature and organic shapes. Resin is used to craft jewelry and vases in bold colors like hot pink and orange. The tableware is striking and very covetable.

Dinostore

Islands of Adventure

Above a juvenile chorus of "I want this!" are adults counseling their kids on what they actually need. That can be a monumental task in this large store, which is packed with dino hats, shorts, necklaces, cards, mugs, squirt guns, figurines, and the clever T. rex T-shirt emblazoned with the helpful suggestion "Bite Me." Rest assured there are educational dino toys, too.

Dior

Midtown East

Very white and very glossy, this boutique sets a serene background to showcase the luxe men's and women's ready-to-wear collections along with handbags, shoes, watches, and accessories. If you're not in the market for fine jewelry or designer dresses, peruse the latest status bag.

Disco Warehouse and Artist Market

French Quarter

This 8,000-square-foot retail wonderland is filled with unique and funky furniture, light fixtures, salvaged items, and art. On weekends, more art fills the space, when local vendors host an art market in the courtyard. The complex is also home to a jewelry shop, Hex Witch shop, and the studio of Epaul Julien, who paints surreal and colorful scenes of the city and its heroes onto salvaged wood and housing materials.

Discovery Wines

East Village

This small wine and spirits shop specializes in small-batch bottles, particularly from lesser-known and up-and-coming wineries that focus on natural and low-intervention wines. Pick up a bottle of pét-nat from the Czech Republic or some amber wine from the Republic of Georgia that had been aged in underground amphoras.

Disney's Pin Traders

Disney Springs

Many cast members and guests share (and wear) a common interest: pins that reflect favorite characters, special events, and all things Disney. Often affixed to lanyards, these pins are a curiously treasured part of Disney's subculture, with owners buying and swapping pins the way kids used to trade baseball cards. This Marketplace shop is one of the premier pin-trading destinations at Disney—and where you can also buy Mickey ears and peruse an astounding array of MagicBands.

Ditto Vintage

One of Bridge Street's newer stores sells stylish, fun vintage and thrifted women's clothing and accessories from the 1960s to the early 2000s, attracting buyers including supermodel Bella Hadid. Prices range from inexpensive to more than $1,000 for some designer finds.
