Reachable by a bridge, Deer Isle's thick woods give way to tidal coves. Stacks of lobster traps populate the backyards of shingled houses, and dirt roads lead to secluded summer cottages. This region is prized by artists, and studios and galleries are plentiful.
At the southern end of the island, Stonington is a charming seaside town with a lovely Main Street. It's also the gateway to Isle au Haut, which contains a remote section of Acadia National Park.
