Favorite local museums: Colburn Gem and Mineral Museum and Biltmore Estate -- Asheville, NC
Favorite "living history" museum: Old Salem -- Winston-Salem, NC
Favorite out of town museum -- North Carolina Museum of Art -- Raleigh, NC
Obviously, I need to get out more, but the choices here in my home state aren't shabby!

There: Orsay, Hermitage, V&A, British, Israel (Jerusalem), Burrell (Glasgow), Van Gogh (collection, not building), Pergamon.
Here: Art Institute (Chicago), Metropolitan NYC, Air & Space, Natural History (NYC), LACMA (go figure), Ditto the Frick, Palace of the Legion of Honor (SF) and Maryhill (Columbia Gorge) for location and vistas.
Best specialty museum in the world IMO - Corning Glass museum in Corning NY.

Museum of Science and Industry - Chicago
Exploratorium - San Francisco
Visiting these brings back my science geek childhood.
The Orange Show - Houston, Texas
A very odd place. Dedicated to the most perfect food in the world, the Orange. Enjoyable if you like Folk Art. Also sponsors the Art Car Parade in the Spring.
My favorite European museum is the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. Small, but an amazing collection.

Cool responses! I see several repeats on your favorite museums. I'm definitely going to check out the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago at some point.
Anyone else wanna share your favorites?

Hi
The Enola Gay will be one of the major exhibits at the new smithsonian out by Dulles Airport. They've taken air exhibits that received a small amount of attention at a facility in Suitland MD and opened the Dulles facility.
I haven't been yet but I'm anxious to see what they have compiled there.

Gardyloo, I love the Burrell! The collection is pretty good, but the architecture of the place is the real standout; it's perfect for the collection. I also like the managable size. I have 2 Burrell posters in my office at work.
I really like the (first) Tate Gallery. The William Blake Collection and illuminated manuscripts are my favorites.
I barely scratched the surface of the San Francisco MOMA last month, but I plan to go back. I mentioned the Art Institute of Chicago in my post above. That place alone was worth my trip to Chicago. I hope to visit the Museum of Science and Industry sometime with my kids.
I have an oddball place to add to this list. It's the Musee de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland. (I know I must have spelled something wrong here.) This museum is a collection of art done mostly by people while they were psychotic. It's fascinating, but wore me out after a couple of hours.
I also like the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, mainly because of its collection of Charlie Russell's letters.
