The Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Even though I'm an art enthusiast! History of bridges, TV, dentistry...why couldn't school have been this fun?

My second favorite is the Bath Museum in England. Recently discovered ruins (relatively) surrounded by a museum - how cool is that? The audio tour is fascinating.

3rd favorite- the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Gotta love the mylar balloons room.

US History Smithsonian in DC. Wish every kid who hated history could go there - makes it come alive and is so fun. Air & Space is also up there.

Closer to home OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science & Industry) in Portland OR. Very hands on and I still love that - can't wait to have kids so I can pretend to play with them.

Reading the replys to this - Chicago has moved up my list of places to go!

Museum of Science and Industry gets my vote for favorite non-art museum. It is huge, you can't see it in one day. - they recenenly redid the model railroad exhibit now it contains several replicas of american cities( Chicago and seattle an everyting in between) the sears tower replica is about 20 feet tall. It is really something to see.

As far as art goes, I have not been to nearly enough to judge. I like so far
Musee Orsay
Musee Louvre
Art institute of Chicago
the MET

Caen, FR- Museum for Peace
Quebec City- Musee de la Civilisation

On my list to do this summer...
Experience Music in Seattle
Art Institute in Chicago

Most unusual museum I've been to: Musee des Egouts (sewer museum) in Paris

I love all the cool answers so far!

Two great museums in England are the Royal Armory in the city of Leeds, and the Castle Museum, in the city of York. In Paris, the Louvre was awesome.

Flying through Dulles, I saw construction for a new museum opening late this year devoted solely to airplanes. Don't know the name.

I love all museums, but tend to like those that allow/encourage human interaction the most. Given that, my favorites are:
- Chicago Museum of Science and Industry
- National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida (what really made this museum visit for me was the fact that the volunteer guide was a retired Naval officer - he really knew his stuff.)

Global: Museo del Prado, Madrid.

US: Art Institute, Chicago.

I want to put in a good word for a few LA area museums: The Norton Simon in Pasadena is eclectic, but it has a lot of good pieces. LA County Museum of Art is improving year after year. Long Beach's Museum of Latin American Art is a unique combination of museum and event space, and worth a trip.

itlyen, I think that museum you saw under construction will house the aircraft that never fit into the Air & Space Museum in DC. The Smithsonian had storage hangars at Dulles which they opened to the public once a year; I'm guessing they're building a nicer facility.

The Guggenheim in Bilboa Spain. The building itself is a work of art.

NYC: the Frick It is small, approachable.

Tulsa: Philbrook...I haven't been there for years but it piqued my interest in art and antiques as a child.

V&A in London more tchotchkes than anyone could ever imagine (G)

Uffizi in Florence I was blown away.

A vote for the Hermitage in St Petersburg. It will blow your mind. Miles and miles of wonderful things, many I think not very often photographed and published in the west, or new to me anyhow. At least when I went the place was pretty much as I assume it has been for a long time, not modernized at all, with nice old Russian ladies watching the rooms.

And: if the OP were writing an article, it would be fine with me, as I was not planning to sell this particular piece of information (the disclosure of a favoriate museum of mine).
