Yet Another NY Restaurant Debate
Having dinner with my wonderful husband - not sure yet if our 14 year old daughter will be with us. I have read through the previous postings and still can't decide....wish I had time for all! I'd love love your thoughts on the following restaurants (and I know they are VERY different from each other). We live in the DC area & dine out a lot. Atmosphere is most important to us - looking for something romantic & pretty - though something with its own personality that isn't "pretty" would be ok too - as long as its not bland. Food quality is important - though it doesn't have to be the "latest & greatest". Service is also key - attentive without being intrusive is what we like. Price & location don't really matter. So...help! And thank you!
La Grenouille?
Gotham Bar & Grill?
Cafe des Artistes?
Something else?

La Genouille is pretty/pretty, food is excellent and service is superb. Very traditional - I can;t tell you how many years ago I started going here.
Cafe des Artisties is very romantic - but not so pretty - more traditional/elegant/european. Service and food also great. Caveat: I have not been here in probably two years - but have continued to hear good things.
Gotham Bar & Grill is fantastic - but a completely different feeling - I would go for this if the 14 year old is going along.

Gotham Bar and Grill is perhaps one of my favorite NYC restaurants. Why? I'm not exactly sure, but all the elements seem to come together there just right. Shades of blasphemy here, but I think I actually like the food better than Grammercy Tavern or Union Square Cafe, for example. The servers always seem so friendly and well trained, not so harried as at many of the other places. And how can a visitor to NYC not LOVE a large open restaurant space with a statue of liberty in it?
I love the atmosphere of Cafe de Artistes, but must admit that I have been seated a couple times so close to others that we must eventually engage each other in conversation -- not my favorite thing to do during dinner -- but the conversations are always started by the others, who always seem to be locals.
Le Grenouille remains on my "must do" list. Why have we never eaten there?
Is it time once again for my very favorite -- Le Bernardin?

If you like classic, non-trendy, old world elegant French, go to La Grenouille. It's the last of it's kind left in NYC. If you prefer something more modern Gotham fits that bill. If your daughter doesn't join you, you might also enjoy March.

La Grenouille, I have loved it for over 30 years. Here is why: a very young LilMsFoodie was taking a group of friends to NYC for the first time. Wanting to impress, I made arrangements for lunch (we couldn't afford dinner) at La Grenouille. I went in a day ahead and told the Maitre 'd what I would like, a lovely lunch for 6 young women and they did not disappoint me, even though at the time it was the restaurant of the moment and the favorite of Womens Wear Daily.
We had a lovely table and perfect service. We were not in Siberia. They did not pretend with the wine list for us, and instead offered us carafes of of white and red wine. One of the girls was pregnant and asked for milk and instead of looking down on her, the headwaiter dispatched a bus boy to walk across the street to buy a quart (cream only in this kitchen). I knew this when I saw him return with a tell-tale brown bag and the milk came out in a pretty pitcher and wine goblet seconds later.
The room was simple and the flowers were the decor. The food was simple and elegant and very properly French. I have never been disappointed here although I imagine things have changed. Not many FFR's left in NYC.
(FFR: fine french restaurant)
Other favorites have shuttered in the years since 9/11. Adieu Lutece and La Caravelle.
I also like Provence which is downtown and relatively trend-free. Not formal and might be nice if your daughter is in tow.
