Best restaurant in NYC?

Union Square Cafe and Grammercy Tavern consistently top Zagat's (don't have it in front of me, but I'm guessing they're still there).
But saying what restaurant in a city of thousands of restauarants is difficult. Not all of my "bests" are pricey, but the expensive ones are the ones that make the biggest splash. Why don't you flip through Zagat to get a quick overview in neighborhoods/types of food you like and then ask for specific comments after you've narrowed it down?
Be warned that any of the very popular/expensive places take reservations a month in advance--and you do need to call then to ensure getting a table.

By eliminating French restaurants, you are also eliminating some of the 'best' places in Manhattan.
Try to research some other NYC favorites:
Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe,
Il Mulino, Craft, Lupa, Babbo.
If $$$ are no object, I'd suggest you also invest in a couple of books like Fodor's and Zagat's.

Becca,
Trust me on this - Norma's for breakfast. It's on the first floor of the Parker Meridien - 118 W. 57th St. It is a brakfast only restaurant but they have elevated it to a dining experience. The $7 orange juice might seem pricey at first blush but try sqeezing your own sometime. Plus they give you free refills. The wah-zaa waffle dish is unbelievable (@$17). We like going on week-ends but get there early - 9:00AM at the very latest. It gets really crowded after that and people get testy waiting in the lobby for an hour or more. After spending a few days in NY this place will seem like a real bargain. Plus it will hold you till dinner.
Also I second the recommedation of Gramercy Tavern. Bon Appetite!

Got my latest Departures magazine in today.
Latest News worthy NYC dining:
Meet, Noche, Compass, Blue Smoke, Kai,
Washington Park, Fiamma Osteria, Giorgione, Atelier.
Also, I have NEVER gone wrong with a recommendation out of Zagat. Whenever I get to a new city, I always go to the bookstore and grap one. It seems to be the only one that does not get tainted by advertising!
