Yankee Game. Safe Subway??

We are coming to New York in June to see our team play the Yankees. We are planning on staying at the Gorham. Any thoughts on this hotel for 2 adults and 2 kids. We would like to take the subway. Is the subway safe in the evening, say after the ballgame. Also, we would we be asking for trouble if
we wore our teams jerseys or caps. We do not mind some good natured banter. Lastly, I read were we might be out of place wearing shorts and sneakers aroung New York. What about the men? Would my husband be out of place wearing a pair of shorts and
maybe a golf shirt? Thanks for all your help. I find this board very informative.

Do a search as this thread/question has been posed many times. However, the answer to your question is yes, it's safe. The subway will drop you off literally across the street from the stadium. Even at night the subway will have lots of people coming and going to the game. Enjoy! FYI-if you want to see the monuments out in left field, get to the game at least 1 hr before it starts. They close the memorial section approximately 30-45 minutes prior to game time.

Libby, there are 2 trains that will take you right up to the Stadium, and you will know you are there, not only by the station name but by the train emptying out.

The D and the 4 train go right there, and yes it is safe at night because there are so many people on the train. It's the easiest way to get there for most NYers.

Depending on where you are sitting, you could probably wear your shirts and hats, but I would not do it if you are sitting in the bleachers.

June will be pretty warm, so shorts are certainly not out of place.

Enjoy the game.

I've taken the #4 several times and it's very safe. Unless your team is Red Sox, you probably won't have any trouble.

No, the Cardinals will be in New York for an inner league series. Should be exciting.
Thanks for your help.

You will fit in just fine, although I would feel uncomfortable with a Boston Red Sox jersey (Yankees arch rival), and I'm not sure about the subway ride home at night. Depending on age and gender of kids, you might feel safer springing for a cab for the trip back. The train ride through the Bronx and Harlem may get a bit funky at night.

Try to take the #4 for a little more dramatic effect -- the subway goes above ground right before the stadium and the station overlooks right center field. (The D train leaves you below ground.)

You'll be safe, no worries.

As for what to wear around the city, wear what's comfortable for you, shorts, sneakers, whatever when sightseeing and be prepared to dress us a little more for dinner depending on where you eat.

For the last 4 years I've led a bunch of little and senior league kids to Yankee stadium via the Metro north and the subway.

We show up in full Red Sox regalia and I can tell you it has always been a delightful trip. Lot's of good natured banter, trash talking and polite insults are the norm.

Because we all share a common language and passion, baseball, it has always been safe and fun.

Like anything else, don't do anything stupid and you'll be fine.

Btw, the upper deck at the stadium is very steep. We had one couple that couldn't sit there because of vertigo last year. The stadium attendants went out of their way to accomodate them.

As a Red Sox fan, I've got nothing but praise for Yankee Stadium.

If you take the subway, dont linger after the game, leave with the crowds. For a more interesting way to arrive at Yankee Stadium take the kids on the New York Waterway ferry boat to the stadium. You can buy tickets over the internet. we've done it with out of town guests and they love it.

I'm a huge fan of Circle Line boat tours, go for the three hours cruise around Manhattan, you get to see everything! The kids love going under the bridges and you get a great view of Yankee Stadium and the Statue of Liberty. A great way to see a lot without killing yourself.

We wear Mets hats, shirts, jackets, visors, etc to Yankee Stadium, never a problem.

Be comfortable, there lots of walking involved. Sneakers and shorts are great for anyone in NYC. I may reconsider Tevas or other types of sandles in the city, incase toes get caught on escalators or stubbed on stairs, etc.

Have a great time!
