you know - the Mansion on Forsyth park is incredible. It's kind of at the end of the historic district....but the extra stroll is worth it for the hotel alone, not to mention the sites along the way. And they do have a taxi. The rooms are incredible and the food and service are also. Not to mention the same company that owns the Casa Monica owns them - - www.mansiononforsythpark.com

We stayed at the Ballastone in March and had a wonderful time. We had the Gazebo Suite and thankfully we didn't find out the room was haunted until the last night I didn't think the breakfasts were all too good but the afternoon tea was delightful. Also know that it is politely requested that you provide a gratuity for the staff (15% daily of room rate I think) which can really add up. I think it's definitely the best accomodation in Savannah and we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. There is a very good Italian restaurant a few blocks away, worth a try. Sorry I don't remember the name but the staff will help with dining and attraction info.

We also stayed at the Casa Monica in St Augustine a few years back, very nice place and you can catch the trolley tour a few steps away.

So much for my expertise as a travel planner! LOL Had planned to take lightweight, summer clothes and will continue in that vein. I used to love the heat and reveled in it on our trips to Mexico, but now that I'm older and have acquired an unwanted layer of insulation I don't handle it as well.

We are very much looking forward to our first visits to Savannah and St. Augustine and even though I goofed on my choice of month to travel, we will just make the best of it!

I checked Trip Advisor sometime ago regarding both hotels and most were excellent reviews and now another vote for both hotels is great. We'll be in the Peach Room---haven't heard if it's alleged to be haunted or not.

Two employees currently working at the inn have seen ghosts, they'll tell you about what they've seen, also the house cleaners have seen aparitions too. I won't tell you exactly what the stories are, you can find out for yourself to save the suspense But there is a new book out by a long time resident and ghost walk tour guide you may be interrested in reading, I'll get the book tomorrow morning (hubby's sleeping upstairs) and post the title and author if you want to find out a few Ballastone secrets before you get there.

Haunted? Heck, at least 90% of the buildings over 125 years old in the south have at least one ghost.

You'll make new friends and have new stories to tell!

Thanks for all the latest. Would love to have the title of the book. I picked up a mystery "Savannah Breeze," which I thought would be a fun read.

Apparently we have lots to look forward to: Wonderful food, nice people, great sightseeing during the day and things that go bump in the night! LOL (don't get me wrong---not laughing at you Savannah apparitions!)

Hi Giovanna, the book is Savannah Hauntings by Robert Edgerly. Robert does haunted ghost tours from a bookstore a few blocks from the hotel at 135 Bull St. One of the Ballastone stories are mentioned on page 80. We did a private haunting tour with him (I think it was $65 for the two of us) and the Savannah Saunter tour where if you're lucky and have a particular guide you'll see the woman with the barking dog from the movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". For some reason the lady likes to come out and see who the guide is giving tours to, so you may see the actual woman that inspired a segment of the book and movie

Oh yes, forgot to mention I didn't get to see the Peach Room but it looks lovely from the internet. The inn keepers keep a few of the rooms open for guests to see and for public inquiries each day, they all have a unique decor and are so comfey looking, wouldn't mind a sample of each accomodation over the years Hope this helps

Thank you travelinwifey! I'll see if I can find the book before we leave and check into the tour when we get there. I may not have chosen the right month to visit, but I sure did choose the right cities! I think we're really going to enjoy this trip.
