Great area but OB which I love has gorgeous homes but besides being caught in a 'time warp' in the business district, they can have a rowdy bunch in apartment buildings, close to the beach..depending where the condo is located..you want to be closer to the cliffs, as south as you can get.
Point Loma is gorgeous too but depends where you are located..it's under the flight path.

Encinitas is nice but take just to long to get into San Diego in my opinion. If I were going to stay in SD I would like to be anywhere from La Jolla south into San Diego. If you are planning to mostly just enjoy the beach and the beachy areas then Northo County is fine. I would skip most of Oceanside.

If you're thinking of OB stay by the cliffs, they're pretty. OB has retained some of it's "old hippie" flavor, they still have one of the largest paraphernalia shops in San Diego, the Black. It's civilized, .
They have a great farmers market on Wed (?), pretty good restaurants. Point Loma Nat. Monument isn’t far, the cliffs are nice for walking. Quieter than MB, not as crowded.
Like TT has pointed out, Point Loma could be right under the flight path, better to visit than to stay. It’s unfortunate b/c there are some really nice places in PT.
North Pacific beach might be a nice alternative also. Would you consider staying a few blocks from the ocean or do you want to hear the roar of the surf as you sleep?
Linda, I’m a native San Diegan. I get down to MB a few times a year. Of course you, ‘would not rent a place that did not offer parking’. It isn’t permitted.

Thanks Cali , I think you hit the nail on the head. We are more interested in the beach area than the city. I think we will go into SD 2-3 times and spend the rest of the time up inLa Jolla, Del Mar, etc.
TT and L84..Do you have any idea how long it would take us to drive from Encinitas to SD.? Paula sent info on what she thinks is the key rush hour, but as she said she does not commute on a daily basis. I asked the owners of the condos in PLOma whether they were under the flight path. Have not heard from either of them. I have you all to thank for that question which I am grateful.
Also if we use the coaster, Paula felt it might be a problem in SD without a car. Are taxis prohibitively expensive?

It's about 45 minutes to San Diego from Encinitas in all but the height of rush hour. You can get it down to about 25 minutes if there is no traffic at all. Taxis aren't expensive in San Diego so much as non existent. You'd have to have restaurants, etc., call them for you.

you have talked about perhaps two different things in this post. You talk about spending a week in the San Diego area and then later talk about spending a whole month there.
If you are spending a week, then perhaps being right in metro San Diego is the best solution if you will be seeing all the sights there.
If you are talking about a month on the beach, then all of San Diego county would be worthy of consideration. $1300 a week for right on the beach is doable in a few places. In fact, $1300 a month is doable.
For a month visit, Oceanside is a good deal. The condos by the harbor are nice - my inlaws stay there. Right on the beach anywhere in Oceanside should also be fine. As mentioned earlier, I lilke Carlsbad best of all.
Be advised that the weather in Tucson is (usually) much warmer and sunnier than San DIego in Feb.

bigtyke I stopped asking any questions about our condo rental situation when I saw the fires and devastion in the area. I sincerely hope that none of the Fodorites I have been receiving info from were severely affected. Hope your property and that of your loved ones
is safe.
Just to quickly answer you We were never intending to spend a month in SD WE are renting for the month of Feb in Tucson. WE have done this in thepast and thought about renting for a week or 2 either in Jan before Tucson or in March after Tucson. We wanted a feel of the area; both the coast line and the city to see if we might want to spend a month in SD next year instead of going back to Tucson.
Everone has been very helpful and we are considering Encinitas or perhaps La Jolla which is better located but more pricey. I stopped everything when the fires began but if some of you are on the boardl just let me know how you are doing. Thanks, Carol
