Where to stop on trip from NJ to Montreal

We are driving up for a long weekend with kids ages 4 & 7. Just wondering if there is anything interesting to break up the trip, somewhat close to I-87, Maybe a farm tour or something similar.

Lake George area has a lot of kid friendly activities, ranging from mini golf to water slide park to roller coasters at Six Flags. There's also the lake, of course, with a few family friendly beaches I can point you to.

Once you are past Lake George you're into the Adirondacks - lots of beautiful open space to enjoy but not much else.

Lots of farms in along the stretch from Albany up to Lake George, but I'm scratching my head about any tours. There are the race horses in Saratoga. If you are there early in the morning, from 7am till about 10 you can see them for free at the practice track. It's racing season from now until Labor day, so Saratoga is kind of busy.

Seasonally there are farms that have self-pick berries or apples. It's blueberry season now. Nothing that close to I87 that I know of.

You might look into the Shelburne Museum in Vermont.

How about stopping in Cooperstown and renting a boat for a ride around Lake Otsego.

Seconding Saratoga and Shelburne Museum. I think Cooperstown might be too far off the route. Be warned, though, that both these places could be a full day.

Fort Ticonderoga is another option. It's about 15 mi. from the Thruway.

Southern Lake George is shlocky.

Just did the drive from Cooperstown to the Thruway, took almost 2 hours.

Another vote Saratoga.

If you end up choosing Saratoga let me know when and I can give you more specific ideas for the days you'll be here.

If nothing else there's a nice park in the middle of town with duck ponds, a carousel, and a Ben & Jerry's 5min away...

I know 8yr olds who can while away hours there... at the park, that is...

Thanks for the great tips. I am leaning towards Saratoga and it will be on a Friday that we are going through town.
