Where to stay in Kauai

Hello everyone!

We are planning our honeymoon to Hawaii this end of July/August and would appreciate some recommendations. I know the differences between climates on the different parts of Kauai but does anyone have a preferred area (Poipu, North Shore, Coconut Coast)? There are a few nice B&Bs in Kapaa and Anahola and we are wondering if we should stay in those areas.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I prefer the town of Hanalei, even though it is overrun by marauding chickens and rich haoles on cruiser bikes.

I stayed in a B&B (actually a 1 apt. unit, South Shore Vista) in Kalaheo. It was less than 15 minutes to Poipu Beach and about 45/50 minutes to Waimea Canyon. Still not too bad to the North Shore (1 1/2 hrs. at the most). And about a 1/2 hour to the airport. If i did a week again, I might split it up, 4 nights in Kalaheo/ Poipu area. Then 3 nights on the northside.

During the summer, I'd definitely go north. I also think the area of Hanalei is the best. Also has access to the more better beaches (my opinion only) of Hideaways, Secret, Tunnels and Ke'e.

We spent our honeymoon in Kauai last November. We stayed on both the south and north sides of the island. Despite the fact that it was sunnier in the south (and you face the sun as you face the water), we prefered the north: better beaches and more secluded. Have fun!

I've stayed on Kauai in July and remember the Poipu coast was a little rough and the north end of the island was calmer for snorkeling. We stayed in Lihue at the Marriott and just drove to the other end of the island when necessary. It depends what you are looking for. You probably can't go wrong staying anywhere on Kauai because it is, afterall, paradise !

The Mariott is well located in Lihue. It would be a good base to explore all sides of the island. Oh, we were on the south side in Feb., so it could be a lot different in July/August.

Love that little stretch of beach at the Sheraton. Drops off a bit so in the winter the whales come in closer.
AWESOME.
