Where to see loons in NH, Maine, VT and Adirondack

We will be traveling this October and we would love to see and photograph loons. Are there any lakes that almost guarantee to see them?

I've not been to Maine in October but I found that there were many loons on Lake Nicatous, Washington County, when I visited there in August of 1984.

Squam Lake in New Hampshire has many loons. The lake does not have too much private access, but there is access from Holderness, NH. Loons have been seen in the channel which goes right through Holderness connecting Little Squam and Big Squam.

Mona - I would do a search on the web for "Lake Umbagog". I was there a few years ago and saw lots of loons, and a bald eagle's nest. One of the websites says, " it's the state's most prouctive breeding territories for the known loon.." I believe it is partly in Maine and New Hampshire. It's georgeous country!! Enjoy.

There is Loon Lake in NY near Pottersville. I don't have first hand experience, but I presume there must be loons there...

You can try the Stillwater Reservoir or Big Moose Lake, both of which are northwest of Eagle Bay in Herkimer County, NY.

Purity Springs Resort used to have a family of loons (with babies) on their lake (its been a few years). Its a nice family resort on the NH/Maine border -- you might want to call them up and ask.

Lake Nubanusit in southern NH, partly in Hancock, Nelson, Harrisville. Mostly conservation area, lots of loons, sometimes nesting eagles too (depending on time of year of course).
