Trying to figure where to go and what to do in VT. Never been there, but I need to go there to reach my goal of all 50 states. This is it-number 50! Like to check out scenery, wildlife. Hoping to go in the fall. My wife and I just want to chill and take in the fall colors.

My best advice is to book early if you want to go in the fall because it is peak season (pun intended) for VT.

You might want to consider the Lake Champlain area for starters near Burlington. Another popular area is the Stowe/Waterbury area. Route 7 and Route 100 are nice drives for colors.

I'm so interested in the responses to your post. We have Vermont and Idaho to go for our 50! Please post a trip report when you return.

You'll both get better results if one of you posts a thread with "Vermont" in the title.

I hope you find accommodations this fall, but I urge you to immediately contact our Vermont web site (vermont.gov) to get information, consirer where you want to go and what you'd like to see or do, and then reserve some place asap.

Autumn in Vermont IS very busy, though no one knows what the current economy, gas prices and air fares) will mean this year.

Making a reservation now is a good idea! Fall is a great time to visit, especially the first week in October. Places I'd recommend are Manchester, Middlebury, Stowe, Killington. Check out rooms near ski areas - they might have more openings than in the bigger towns plus the mountains are beautiful. I talk about more Vermont sites on my web site - mysecretvermont.com

The Trapp Family have been unofficial heros of mine since I saw The Sound of Music...I know it isn't Austria but it is in Vermont!!

Lucky duck, Vermont is one of my favorite states! Three years ago I took a walking tour of VT in the fall with my 65 year old mother. We had a WONDERFUL time. If you enjoy walking, Vermont is the PERFECT place to just amble along a country road. We went through a company called Country Inns Along the Trail. (inntoinn.com). We stayed at several lovely inns (The Chrisanver House and Mountain View Inn were the highlights.)

But if you aren't interested in walking or hiking your way through Vermont, then I would pick 3-4 country towns and spend a night in each of 'em. Middlebury is cute, as is Vergennes and Brandon.

And make sure to spend a couple of days in Burlington. It has a beautiful lake an some nice restaurants.

Do you know what dates in the fall? Try to avoid Columbus Day weekend -- it will be very crowded and hard to find rooms. The same goes for weekends in college towns like Middlebury - lots of parents' weekends and sports activities. Best to visit there during the week if you can. Do plan to stop by Middlebury, though. It's a great Vermont town. Another area that has not bee mentioned is the Woodstock/Quechee area, and the Warren/Waitsfield Valley. Lots to see in do.
