Fall foliage trip in Vermont

Hi, I'm planning fall foliage trip in october 3-6 in Vermont. Could anybody give me advice were to go and were to stay. We will be coming from NJ, so may be Southern part is good for us, so we don't have to drive too far? Any suggestion will be very appretiated.
Thanks a lot.

Vermont is a small state, so you could lodge in Bennington, Brattleboro, or anywhere in between along Route 9. (Have you a map?) Lodging tends to be more economical in Brattleboro. The very best way to enjoy the scenery is by driving all over each day, and depending upon where the best colors happen to be during your visit, you would obviously head in that direction. Though, the farther north you drive through the Green Mountains, the more breathtaking the vistas and glorious foliage.

In the alternative, if you just don't want to drive to much or too far, you could head for the Berkshires in MA. Or, even northwestern CT.

Get a travel Vermont guide will give you fall foliage tour routes and interesting things to see along the way, it takes a while to get this 3-4 weeks so order now. Also get busy planning your trip it may already be to late to make reservations as the 'leaf peepers' flock to the area during fall foliage times, which vary by the way.
We stayed in Barre, you can go to Ben & Jerry's ice cream, make apple cider at the Cider Mill and eat at the Culinary Institute of New England (this is in Burlington).
If you truly don't care about the the New England experience, try going to the Albany NY area or the Finger Lakes area. Not quite as far but the same colors. Enjoy, we certainly did.

Since it's impossible to predict exactly where the foliage will be at its peak on any given weekend, you might as well stay in southern VT; if the foliage is still farther north, you can just head up that way! As others have said, you are indeed planning at the last minute -- some rooms get booked early a year in advance.

Thanks for usefull information. We don't have to be in Vermont, we can go close to MA, as long as it's nice fall foliage. Any recomendation for places/towns/area to visit and place to sleep will be very helpfull. We will travell with 8 year old son.
Thanks a lot.
