New England doesn't have a world class zoo but the Roger Williams zoo just outside Providince is very nice. Not worth a special trip to RI for but if you happen to be in the area it is quite pleasant. Particularly nicer for younger children. The entire Roger Williams park is quite nice for strolling etc. And if you visit in the summer you have to get a Del's frozen lemonade from one of their green and yellow trucks.

Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, KS is excellent. We have a new lion exhibit and are building a gorilla exhibit. Also has a really nice North American Prairie exhibit. If you are ever in the area, stop by. Prices are on average for zoos these days--$8 for adults. But if you have a membership with another zoo, check to see if it reciprocates. That is how we see many zoos when we travel.

Actually, the aquarium in Gatlinburg is very nice. I was a bit hesitant about the price, but the woman at the visitor's center assured us it was worth it & even found us a coupon to reduce the price a bit. The exhibits were well done and interesting and there was a ton of sea life. The tunnel you walk through (with water on all sides) is simply fascinating and full of sharks. And the Stingray petting pool was a lot of fun (they have been de-stingered!) I would definitely recommend it if you find yourself in the area.

I live in Denver and I don't think the zoo is all that great. I'd probably do other things during your visit and skip the zoo.

The Fort Worth Texas zoo is amazing. I was there this weekend and was blown away. I've been to the San Diego zoo (as well as many others) so I think I have a good basis for comparison. The FW zoo has beautiful and large habits and is surrounded by lush, tall, thick vegetation - yes in Ft. Worth, TX. While in FW, you have to visit the cultural district - Kimball Art Museum etc.

The Baltimore Aquarium is very nice, and if you are in the area, I highly recommend it.

In Washington DC, the National Aquarium is interesting. I was fascinated as a kid, many years ago. It's at 14th & Constitution in the Dept of Commerce Building. I don't think it is very well advertised. I don't remember having to pay.

The San Diego Zoo is the best.

Blue,

The AMerican Zoo and Aquarium Association would not give the NAtional Zoo ful acredidation.

It needs work.

San Diego was a disappointment, old fashion with cages and bars. The large aminals all out in their zoo that is in the country. Brookfield zoo in Chicago area just wonderful, especially the rainforest building

judya, it must be some time since your visit to the San Diego Zoo. For many years, and at huge expense, they have been taking out the old fashioned bars and cages and replacing them with really innovative, wonderful areas.

Zoo: havn't done San Diego.
Loved the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson.
Pittsburgh zoo is soooo sad.

Aquarium : visited Baltimore and Shedd in Chicago. Prefered Baltimore: better display and design.

Omaha Nebraska has a fantastic zoo. It has an aquarium, IMAX, rain forest aviary, and much more. Not free, not San Diego, but certainly a great zoo.

Went to the National Zoo in DC this weekend and it was OK but not terrific!
We didn't see many animals...1 lion, 1 seal, 1 prairie dog that seemed to be begging to get out...1 sleeping lion..
It was not what I remembered taking our kids to some years back! Beautiful day though!

St Louis Zoo by layout and atmosphere. Parking has rocketed to $8 but the zoo itself is still free. Zoo memberships are fairly inexpensive and give more than enough tickets to cover the added charges for the children's zoo, train, insectarium, and animal shows. It also provides reciprical admittance to most of the other zoos in the country.

The zoo has been expanding a lot lately and is becoming more like San Diego. While San Diego is nice, I think you end up seeing more habitat and less critter. The walks between animals is also growing. Brookdale was nice but there is a lot of walking without seeing anything.

2004 is a big anniversary year for St Louis...marking the 1904 Worlds Fair and Louisianna Purchase Acquisition, in addition to hosting the 1904 Olympics. Except a lot of changes if you haven't been in town lately. Forest Park and the zoo are seeing amazing changes.

San Diego Zoo was a big dissappointment to me. My favorite, the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro...

I would pay the admission to the Columbus Zoo just to watch the gorillas. It's a great exhibit that lets you get right up close and personal.

We loved the jellyfish and art exhbit at the Monterey Aquarium and the Amazon exhibit at Shedd's in Chicago.

Best zoo: San Diego Zoo with Columbus zoo a close second

Best Aqaurium: I really liked the Monterey Bay Aqauarium. I have heard that the National Aquarium in Baltimore is also very nice.

It's not in the U.S., but the Toronto Zoo is huge (700 acres) with lots of animals in their natural habitats, and is one of the most beautiful you'll ever see. It's truly designed with animals in mind, tho, so it entails a whole lot of walking.

Best Aquarium-hands down is the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago! I have traveled extensively throughout the USA and the world and always stop at every aquarium(daughter is going into marine biology) and you will not find a better representative for aquariums. If you can only take your family to one aquarium-this is the one. It has the largest coral reef, oceanarium that is huge and overlooks lake Michigan, lots of other fascinating exhibits plus the new Wild Reef which has the sharks and other species of a Phillipine coral reef.It is considered the biggest aquarium in the world and I think that after you visit it-everything else pales.Don't bothers in our family would include:New England Aquarium
Do stop:Monterrey,Vancouver,Tampa

I don't know if you'd consider this a zoo but what about Animal Kingdom WDW? Very natural habitats.
