Actually speaking of summer or tropical vacations vs. mountains/land based trips. I will not go high season to any NE or SE Atlantic coast in the summer. I want to see non-water based places such as the mid-west and the Rocky Mountains were there are the least amount of people necessary. Huge masses of people ruin vacations.

I'm interested: Exactly WHY do some of you dislike Las Vegas so much? I have never been there, but it's on my list of places I want to visit soon. I was thinking shows and gambling and fun nightlife sounded like a good trip. I thought everyone thought it was great and thought I was missing out on something...until I saw this thread. Now I want to know what I am NOT missing! Can someone enlighten me?

100% agreed that Mongomery, AL is the armpit of the south. And Moblie is no great shakes either. I hope you all understand that there ARE nice cities in other parts of Alabama. Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Huntsville are lovely, each for different reasons.

I thought I'd never want to go to NYC for the same reasons listed above (rude, dirty, etc)..until I actually went there. LOVE IT!! I return every single chance I get.

I don't really want to go back to New Orleans, Atlanta, or Natchez, MS, unless I have to. I am uninterested in Gatlinburg, Hawaii, and the popular vacation destination of Prague...just don't see the interest there.

I had an ok time in Las Vegas. But, I don't like to gamble much, don't care for large hotels, don't care for buffet food, and don't like cities. Just not my kind of place.

I'm usually up for just about any trip but that said, I have no desire to return to Indiana, Minnesota, or Oregon! Reasons? I went on business trips to the first two that were less than thrilling and as for Oregon... I was very upset as a 10 year old that the ocean was dangerous and too cold to play in! ( I was used to body surfing in Santa Cruz, CA.)During other visits, I just haven't been impressed... still like a warm beach, I guess.

Iowa. I went there on a "self-designed farming vacation" and had a blast, but I don't think the experience can be repeated

Las Vegas. If gambling and girly glitz shows and weird 24/7 lighting, pretend scenery, and high-cost sleaze appeal to you, by all means go.

Atlanta. It has some lovely, lovely residential areas, but otherwise I don't care about CocaCola, and Atlanta Underground needs only doing once, at most.

Tijuana. Why would I want to go to a grubby, crime-focused border town with no beauty and no authenticity?

No desire to see Branson; for ilovetulips -- Amsterdam is an interesting city, and Haarlem is a great place to base for a multi-day visit to the Netherlands; train into Amsterdam or other places like Delft on day trips -- so nice to get back to Haarlem to sleep!

After seeing the movie Sideways I have less desire to go to California wine country. I wasn't impressed with the scenery in the scenes shot at the vineyards. The town scenes focused on strip malls, cheap motels, ugly restaurants and car dealerships. The winerys seemed to fall into two categories - pompous or tourist traps.

Of course, having read a number of reports here, I'm sure this is not the case. I'm sure there are lovely inns, beautiful restaurants etc. And I still intend to go when I get the chance. But you've got to admit the movie did nothing to enhance the image of the area.

After thinking about it more, I stand corrected. Reno, NV is the tackiest place I've been to and Vegas is second. Reno is Vegas without the shows.
I agree about Acapulco, it is a toilet (literally). If you swim in the bay you will come out with garbage sticking to you. I also saw human waste in my hotel's pool (4 star too).

I'm going to have to say the state of Florida. I love to snorkle, and after numerous trips the caribbean's beautiful beaches and blue water, Florida just seems subpar. However my parents just bought a condo in Naples and my little ones have heard of this Disney place, so I imagine I'll be headed there before too long. I'm sure it will be nice, just a place I'd visit otherwise.

Also never really had much of an interest in Vegas. It seems like such a manufactured destination. I'm sure I'll go some day to check it out and I bet I'll have fun, but there are so many other places I'd like to explore first.

I'm really interested in the comments about Reno because I live here. Unfortunately, seeing it from a visitor's perspective, I can't disagree with a lot that has been said. The down town area has just been horrible for the last 10-15 years. Re-development is in progress but it will take time and then it will be difficult to present a "new image" to those who have visited in prior years. Reno had no vision of what it wanted to be and we certainly can't be a Las Vegas. As far as Las Vegas goes...well, like I said, 36 million people a year strongly disagree with me...I find it tacky, way over priced. Everytime you turn around, everything you want to do, they charge you. The hawkers and hucksters are every where. The strip is pretty ugly in between the hotels. The service and the food are in general lousy but there are some fabulous restaurants there if you want to pay the price. The cost of most of the shows is just unbelievable. My girlfriend is attending a Red Hat Society convention is Las Vegas in June..yes June!!! She wants me to go but I can go back to Paris for what this would cost me. Again, just my personal choice. My main reason for going to Las Vegas for a few days is shopping. They have it all. There was an article in the business page not too long ago that the gambling is actually taking second place to the shopping. I hope that those that live in Las Vegas do not take offense at this..any more than I should take offense at peoples comments about Reno. Any place you live, you make your life...you have your friends, you have your local gym, you have school activities with your kids, you have your church..you pack up the boat, pack up the cooler, load up the kids and take off for Lake Mead for the day...just the normal kind of stuff that anyone does. I haven't been downtowm Reno since a year ago Christmas..one of my clients had a dinner at the Eldorado. I haven't been downtowm since then.

I'm with Stephanie on travel timing/placement. It isn't just the place itself that is a factor in where you do not want to go. Going anywhere on shoulder season or off-season is a different experience of the place entirely. So I also include almost all big city and tourist spots in summer. I'd rather be by my lake in the Midwest.

Bennie: The movie "Sideways" was shot in the wine-growing region of the Central California coast, not the Napa/Sonoma "Wine Country" area which is much more lush and scenic.

I, too, can't understand why anyone would want to go to Branson. Other than that, I would like to go just about anywhere in the U.S. at least once.

I would never go back to Guadalajara, Mexico, hands down the most horrible place I've ever been. But love Acapulco - have been there three times.
