"well here's one article from Feb of 08 that statesquot;
Yeah, but it's published by the "Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry". Bottom line is, if you want to take a walk on the wild side and score yourself a knock off in China Town I say have fun and don't worry about contributing to terrorism. Unless you're Amish and only travel by horse and buggy you are contributing a whole lot more every time you fill your tank.

I think there is a huge difference between buying a knockoff and a counterfiet.
You can google Interpol and Counterfieting and find some very interesting reads.
Gekko, no one is trying to take money from the people selling knockoffs. Give it a rest.

To keep insisting this is a victimless crime makes you look stupid.

YAY, the advertising has been deleted, good job, Fodor's!! =D>
(if you're puzzled, there was a post from a guy saying he's in China, and can get anything fake and his URL posted)

People buy fake Rolexes for the same reason people buy real Rolexes -- to impress other people who see it. The "advantage" is that a fake one saves your bank account.
I have a great TagHeuer I bought for about $300 nearly nine years ago and I've worn it every day since. It has never lost a minute except the one time the battery wore out and I had to get a new one. I can't think of a single possible reason to spend $5000 or more for a Rolex except to impress other people noticing it. Maybe that's just me.

The best place for a fake Rolex is a fake watch store.

But Faina, when I went to the fake watch store, I couldn't get in. The door was a fake. I walked around behind and sure enough -- there was no store, it was a fake.

And you couldn't fake walking in? Patrick, you must really work on improving your imagination. Enrolling in an amateur theater group might help.

Neo.....but I really did LIKE that Rolex !!
many, many decades ago when we were first dating my now husband said he'd like to buy me a new watch for an upcoming holiday - to look around and see what I'd like - I kept looking in stores and flipping through magazines and nothing jumped out at me - I was wearing a navy Movado my Dad had given me but I wanted something different - and non navy for some things -
then one day, I flipped a page and voila - there is was! - a young lady leaning on her elbow looking out at who knows what but on her wrist was my watch ! Well, not mine yet but exactly what I would want my next watch to look like if I could design it -
So I excitedly called my guy and said hey, I found it !
He said great, tear it out and bring the ad that night.
He looked at it, looked at me and said, "honey, this is a rolex. " and I said "what does that mean?" and he said " if you want this watch we can just keep saving longer for that downpayment on that condo we've been talking about" He told me the approximate price and I laughed so loud -
so I didn't get the rolex.
But I did get it several years later under the Christmas tree.
So there are occasions when people choose a Rolex because they really like the design and not to impress anyone - and for whatever reason, are willing to pay stupid money for it -
At that point, if someone can afford it, so what - same could be said of bags, shoes, cars, furniture, home decor, vacations, spa treatments....
My uncle wouldn't pay $ 100 per person for ANY dinner for it to be 'gone the next day' - but I would -
so things are not always to impress anyone, but to enjoy - to each their own -
I have plenty of friends who buy fake bags etc in NYC
for me, I wouldn't bother -
if I like something enough I will buy it, if I can't afford it, I find something else I like -
I'd personally rather do that then have a 'pretend' one -
to me, often times, the cost is b/c of the style or quality of goods or leather or silk or cashmere or whatever -
and it is either worth it to me or not.
Some people like their BMW, others wouldn't bother paying for one if no one was every going to see them drive it -
all depends.... that's what makes a horse race !

And I must admit that someone right now is probably reading my post and saying, "you paid $300 for TagHeuer watch? My Timex I bought for $19.95 keeps perfect time." So, yes, I guess it's all relative.

The real question is why is this minorleagueguy's first and only post on this forum, and on a thread that's over 3 years old and was started 5 years ago?
