I am confused as to why anyone would want a fake Rolex.

If I want an inferior watch there are plenty to choose from in my grocery stores and local drug stores.

I hate sounding like a prude. Selling (and buying) "fakes" is a violation of U.S. and international intellectual property law(s). I'm surprised that most on this board think this is a legitimate, harmless activity. If you were the artist, creator, inventor, investor of a protected product(or song, etc.), what would your advice be to this question?

Just wait until your next batch of e-mails come ???!!! We all know that this is a common practice, particularly in NY. Bird - you need to lighten up a bit. I certainly don't partake (I don't even wear a watch) but I know a ton of ladies who have 'hand bag collections' from NYC.

Without sin? Jaywalking and speeding are crimes too. Hopefully adults can determine for themselves what they're comfortable with.

I must disagree a bit with thereadbaron. In my experience, you'll find more vendors to the east of Broadway on Canal Street, all the way to Mulberry Street.

Gekko,

I think that the "without sin" phrase you refered to was in regard to forgiving sinners, not promoting sin.

I never said my sense of direction was good. but you are correct. In any event, that is how the "deal goes down" for a good knockoff. And yes, they have with the proper sweeping second hand.

there is a difference between genuine fakes and just plain fakes. Genuine fakes are very hard to distinguish from the real thing.

Other fakes generally are not even replicas of the currrent rolex stock, they just resemble a rolex. OH and if you have to change the battery then you have a crappy, real crappy fake.

again, why you'd go out of your way to buy a fake rolex is beyond me. I wear a fake rolex but I was looking for a seiko but since I couldn;t find anythign else to suit me I just grabbed what I could -rolex (i'm ashamed) but its very plain and boring so not so bad i spose.

The only reasnable explanantion I can think of for looking to buy a fake rolex is that you are a teenager who wants to wear overtly fake things to get all blinged up because wearing fake bling is cool. My only other reasoning is maybe you're a tosser?

My question is, why would anyone pay for a real Rolex?

In light of the environmental damage, corporate fraud, and inhumane behavior of a great number of large american and international "legitimate" corporations, I don't think anyone should lose sleep over the purchase of a ROLEX on Canal street!

Seriously, I really would be interested to hear why someone would buy a fake Rolex. Any of you fake Rolex wearing folks out there - let's hear it!

I'll go first. I have one fake TAG and one fake Rolex, although I did not buy them beacause they were fake TAGs and Rolex's.
I bought the first only because I was going out of town for a business trip, and happened to leave home without my watch. My office is near Battery Park, and before heading to the airport, I went to the park to buy a watch. I hate being without one, especially while traveling, so I just wanted to pick one up before I left. I just picked one out that looked good and fit me, and got it for only $10, and it happened to be a "TAG". (That was 3 years ago and it's actually still working).
I got the second (the "Rolex") just because I wanted another knockaround, everyday watch that I could wear and not care if anything happened to it. I have nice watches that I wear for work and other "dressier" occasions, but I like having a few watches for casual, weekend, travel, etc. I like the heavier bracelet type watches for that, they seem to hold up a bit better. I also like having a few at home to choose from so I can change up every now and then, and if something happens to it in my travels, I really don't care. Again, I didn't buy it to have a fake Rolex, I just bought it to have another watch to choose from, it looked good and was inexpensive. Don't really care that it has the appearance of a Rolex, just wanted something that looked ok and felt ok on my wrist.

And again, I ask seriously, who would want to buy a real Rolex? (I bought my fauxlex for the look on my sister's face [of course I told her after that]and because it was pretty--I bought my huge cubic zirconia for the look on my husband's face [that was fun for 2 days].)

My intent of my post wasnt to knock the hardworking families on Canal street. These products are not always made by the same companies. In fact many times these companies will donate money (NFL for one) to help combat this stuff. Now I understand that for every "authentic" knockoff that is bought the NFL loses out on a sale but...If these vendors do fund drugs, crime or terrorism is it worth it to save a few bucks? As I said before make of the report what you will but maybe a trip to the WTC would help people make up their minds. Or maybe you would rather swim with dolphins.

Hope you should not get with a "false" real car with false real gas and to sleep in a false real bed in a false real hotel...
Why would you wear what it is not what the others think it is??
Apparence is not the more important, isn't it ???
or perhaps you know false real friends??

My answer to Sylvia's question is:

Because they can.

Rolex's are well made, don't exploit slave labor, and aren't even that expensive in the world of watches.

Why wear a $30 Timex when you're wearing a $1,000 pair of shoes?

I only wear a watch on rare occascion and it's a cheapo I actually got for free but I could care less what other people choose to spend their money on.

Sylvia---I own a couple of Rolexes and have had both for more than 20 years. One of them I bought used and it was more than 20 years old at the time I got it (from a Rolex dealer) The other I bought new. They are wonderful watches and keep great time and never go out of style. Of course they are ridiculously expensive but considering the life of these timepieces I feel like it was a reasonable investment, at least for me.
Besides, someday (when I am much older) I plan to give each one to one of my 2 nephews (I have no kids of my own) and I am sure they will get many more years of enjoyment from them.

Correction---I didn't mean to say I would give each watch to one of my nephews but rather will give one watch to each of my nephews. Previewing before posting is a really good idea.
btw: My BIL bought a "fake" a couple years ago in NY and took it to a high end jeweler (not a Rolex dealer though) in his hometown when he got home to have the bracelet adjusted.
The jeweler took it and made the adjustments and handed it back to him and admiringly said "very nice watch".
He tells me it still keeps very good time. I guess some of these are better than others.
