We will be flying round trip to Oahu from Detroit in April. We will need to book an inter-island flight to get to Maui, then back to Oahu. Our flight from Oahu leaves at 9:45 p.m. to head back to the mainland. What would be a good time to schedule our flight from Maui back to Oahu in order to catch the 9:45 flight? I want to give us enough time to get there without having to worry, but not too much time where we feel our last day is wasted siting around aiports! Any suggestions?

Assuming you already booked your round trip to Oahu? Otherwise you probably could have flown into Oahu and flown home from Maui, or vise versa. As to the interisland flights, it would depend on what airline is offering what times on when you could get back to Oahu.

Count on the fact that it's a 30 minute flight to Oahu from Maui, but then you'll have to change terminals from the interisland terminal either by bus or a 10 minute walk (with all of your stuff). You'll then have to re-check your baggage for your mainland flight. Give yourself at least a couple of hours from the time you fly out of Maui and your return flight!

We have already booked our flight out of Oahu. I looked into other options but this was the best way to do it for us. It sounds like if we plan to arrive back on Oahu by 7:00 we should be fine? Thanks.

You shouldn't have to check lucggage, as the interisland airlines will check it through for you.

I think you are very safe in trying to arrive in HNL by 7pm. You don't want to cut it too close, just on the odd chance that your Maui flight is delayed or cancelled for some reason. You can get between the two flights in about 10 minutes.

On our last trip in and out of Oahu,(best we could do with award seats) our flight times changed 3 times in the course of 330 days. we left maui at 5:30 pm (based on award seat availability) and had more than enough time. Of course you can check your bags all the way through from Maui.
