John, we are coming from Brisbane, Australia.
Nytraveller - I wouldn't say my daughter is particularly sheltered, however she does think that going to the USA is just about Disneyland, restaurants and the Statue of Liberty.

We've already planned to go to Brooklyn, get pizza and walk the bridge, while my husband is with us. This particular outing will just be my daughter and I and we want to stick to the top end.

I'm thinking maybe some sort of tour of Harlem as I'm interested in the area and the history and the food, and a tour would be "safer".

How about visiting Grand Central with your husband and letting him go up on the 4 while you walk over to the main branch of the New York Public Library where you see the original Pooh dolls amongst other many wonderful things.

Then walk to 7th Avenue and take the 2 or 3 (express) trains up to 135th Street where you can visit the Schomburg Library and have lunch at Miss Maude's.
