What part of town?
A friend and I would like to go to NY, but have no idea of where to stay. We want safe for $150-$200, but within walking distance of most things. We want to be in the middle of everything, but are clueless as to what we need. Any hotel suggestions?

When are you going? that will have a major effect on price.
And $300 is the usual rate for the chain hotels in NYC. If you want midtown for less than that you will either need to go to a budget chain, use Priceline, or go to some of the discount web sites to see if they are offering any specials. Affinia is a group of all suite hotels that sometimes has good deals if you check/reigster on their (eponymous) web site.
Or - try another neighborhood that may have better prices. I always suggest the upper west side - very diverse, fairly upscale residential area - but with a huge # of moderately priced restaurants, good subway access and handy to central park, the Met Museum, the Museum of Natural Hist and Lincoln Center.
(And just so you know - tourist things in NYC are quite spread out - and you will be able to walk to everything only if you're prepared to do 10 or 15 miles per day. No matter what neighborhood you stay in you'll have to do a lot via subway.)
