What is the difference between Jackson Hole and Jackson, WY?

I'm really confused about these 2 towns -- Jackson Hole and Jackson, WY. How are they related to each other? Which one is the airport? Our flight is going to Jackson, WY. Which one is the downtown/sightseeing place? Where should we stay? Know any nice campground in the city?
Thanks!

The "hole" is the valley. Jackson is the town.

When you get there, you will see it. The valley (the hole) is surrounded by mountains. To get to the town (at the southern end of the valley) a mountain man/settler/you will have to cross a pass in the mountains and the hole/valley will be in front of you. Follow the road to the town of Jackson.

A bit of trivia - the pass was so steep, the wheels of the wagons were moved so that the big wheels were downhill and the small wheels uphill and big lodgepole pines were tied to the wagons to slow down their descent into the hole/valley. When the wagon made it to the valley floor, the tree was cut off and just left. When it was time to build the first public building in Jackson, they didn't need to fell any trees - there were enough already piled up at the base of the trail over the pass.

starrs is correct - although I did not know the trivia. They are often used incorrectly but interchangeably by visitors - so don't worry that they are on opposite sides of the state.

I don't understand the "opposite side of the state".

Jackson Hole is the valley in which the town (Jackson) is located. The hole/valley is created by the mountains surrounding it. Jackson is the town that grew up at the southern end of the valley/hole. Settlers came in to settle because the hole/valley was good farmland. Now the hole/valley is mostly national park - Grand Teton NP.

I think Gail was just trying to reassure the original poster that they were not on the opposite sides of the state.

Just about the most beautiful thing in the West. You wouldn't really want a campground in town, in my opinion. And the valley is not super long, leading up to Yellowstone.

To clarify, the airport and downtown are in Jackson? That's where all the happenings and hotels are? Anything in the Hole for sightseeing?

A guide book I'm reading is using these 2 terms interchangeable, and it's confusing.

Thanks, all. The fodor's guide actually had a very good description--the only guidebook among the ones I looked at that actually took the time to explain. So, Jackson Hole is the name of the whole are including several towns and Grand Teton NP. Jackson is one of the towns in Jackson Hole.
