I read this once, and try and do this upon unpacking...

When you're in the room, locate washcloths and towels, sink. Make a mental note.

Look at chart on the back of the door, and find your nearest exit. Count the doors from your door.

When you leave the room, look down the hall and see the exit.

So, if there is a fire, and you can't see, mentally remember where the towels are, wet one, drop to the floor
(after feeling the temp of the door)
put the towel over your mouth and nose and crawl to the exit (if there is smoke. Smoke rises, the floor will have less.)

I know, not pleasant to think about, but it's good to be prepared.

At the firm I work at we have to review hotel disasters, and review hotel codes for fire. We had to read all about the MGM fire and what should have been done to prevent it.

We don't want to lose any of our Fodorites!!

The unpleasantness of some contributors is inexplicable.

OldSouthernBelle, good point about the locked stairwells which are "suppose" to open if there is a fire. It only takes on dope head or one computer malfuction to screw it up so the doors won't open. Fire escapes should Never be locked. i.e. the bar fire in New York where dozens of people were killed because some idiot locked the fire escape door.

No one has mentioned my Number 1 requirement in a hotel - good Room Service, preferably 24 hours!

Have you been in a situation where:

a) You have all the road warrior necessities (laptop, blackberry, cellphone) and only one place to plug them for the night?

b) You're in a room with a desk, you set up your laptop there, only to find out that the nearest plug is on the night table?

c) You're in dire need of ironing something, you find the iron and the board, and then you have to cram everything in the bathroom b/c there are no other outlets available???
