What do you think about the Ritz on Maui

Some friends want us to go with them to Maui in January and stay at the Ritz hotel.
We would rather stay in Kaanipali, where there are more things to do.

Where would you stay?

Staying at the Ritz and staying in the Kaanapali area are two completely different experiences. The Ritz is much more laid back, refined and quiet whereas the Kaanapali area can be crowded. You may have to get to the pool area early in the morning to secure a nice lounge chair for example. There has been a great deal of beach erosion in the area as well so I'd make sure that the hotel you pick still has a wide beach if that is important to you. If you like to be where the "action" is, then by all means, stay at Kaanapali. You'll be bored to tears at the Ritz.
My preference is the Ritz however, simply because I do not like to have to fight for a spot at the pool or beach, and I like the service and layout of the Ritz. It is very relaxing and elegant. The weather can be cooler and there can be wind and rain present at the Ritz when it is perfectly sunny at Kaanapali. We've always had perfect weather during our stays but I know of others who have been disappointed when the weather was bad.
If you do decide to stay at the Ritz, keep in mind, it is only a 15 minute drive down to the Kaanapali area. We drove down several nights for dinner in the Whalers Village area.

We've stayed at the Ritz twice over the past few years in November and all it did was blow sand all over the beach. And the water is rough in the winter.
The Kapalua area is very windy and rainy as is Kaanapali in the winter.
For much better weather go to the Wailea area and if you want luxe, stay at the 4 seasons.

Just for the record.. the beach is back to normal at Kaanapali. Stay at the Ritz if you want quiet. VERY quiet!

Oh for heaven's sake!

Sorry, couldn't help myself!

I think the Ritz is lovely. I also think that Wailea may be a good compromise for both couples. And Makena beach right there!!! As well as Tommy Bahama Bar for a bit of nightlife! Good Luck, and do go away with your friends, those are the lifetime memories!!!!

Yes, I have heard that it is windy at the Ritz. We'll work on this. We would rather stay in Kaanapali or Wealea where it is sunnier.

Will it be chilly in Jan on Maui?

Thanks for your time.
