Westin Times Square or Waldorf Astoria

Please help. Cannot decide on whether to stay at The Westin @ Times Square or the Waldorf. Rates are the same.

Which neighborhood do you want to be in (they're completely different)? What matters to you most in a hotel (elegant public areas, good service, modern rooms)? Have you looked at tripadvisor?

I've read various reports on different forums, but haven't stayed at either. But it sounds to me like almost nothing can beat the Westin for comfort. The Waldorf Astoria seems to generate many more complaints, including some that are quite unpleasant. It might or might not be accurate, but that's my impression.

We stayed at the Westin Times Square last Christmas. It is a couple blocks off Times Square on a nondescript street--easy walking distance to many sights, and an easy subway ride everywhere else. Decor is ultra modern, aka stark. Beds are dreamy, and we had an amazing view toward lower Manhattan--180 deg. from Empire State Bldg to Hudson River and West Side. Only one restaruant, and minimal gift shop.
