SF Hotels for under $150/night (Union Square)?
Hi,
Headed to LA and SF for the first time in Feb. I am traveling with 2 other adults, and the 3 of us are sharing a room for the week. We already booked our hotel in LA (Hollywood Renaissance) and are now looking for a hotel in SF.
We would like to stay in the Union Square area, within walking distance of the cable cars, restaurants, shopping, etc...Our budget for this leg of the trip is $150 or under per night. Nothing fancy...hoping for clean, modern, good service, 2 double beds, and a mini-fridge in the room.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I just stayed at the Adante Hotel in SF, a few weeks ago and loved the hotel and location just 2 blocks away from Union Square. Several restaurants across the steet and an internet cafe in the hotel, for snacks. There is a complimentary muffin/cereal breakfast and a cute lobby. It's a small boutique hotel and you can get a suite there for your budget easily. I think the suites go for $120 a night and I think there is a fridge available in the room as well.
Check www.hotels.com for more info and the phone number/contact info for the hotel.

beachgirl, you might also to check out Villa Florence which is a Kimpton Hotel.
It is on Powell St., just one half block south on Powell St. from Union Square. Cable car runs on Powell St.
I have stayed there many times. They do have rooms with 2 double beds. Rooms not large but very nice and clean and wonderful staff. You should be able to get a room for $150.00 or under especially in Feb. Kuleto's Restaurant is attached and the hotel has a complimentary wine service around 5:00pm or so and of course lots of good restaurants in the area and well as shopping. Across the street, up Powell going north from Union Square about one half block is a wonderful restaurant,
Scalas. Just so many places to go to and easy walking every you might want to go to.
And transportation is right there also. About 2 blocks south on Powell
St. is the BART Station on Market St. or catch the street cars to Fisherman Wharf also on Market St. Taxi's easy to get also.
Have a fun trip!

Thanks for the suggestions...I will be checking them out! Villa Florence was one I already looked at...the rates on their website were around $180, but hotels.com had them for much cheaper...around $130/night.
I don't think we'll be using a car in SF, maybe only renting one for the day if we decide to visit Napa or Sonoma.

Check out The Andrews Hotel which we always use on Post Street, two blocks from Union Square. It not only includes a huge complimentary breakfast buffet on each floor, but a glass of wine in the evening.

The Andrews Hotel is where I stay too! 2 blocks off Union Square kind of 'behind' the St. Francis. I paid ~$100 for a single once & a double with 2 single beds the other time. The larger front rooms with a bay window are nice, probably still in your price range, not sure of bed configurations. They put out a generous continential breakfast in the hallway on each floor (coffee, tea, OJ, pastries, fruit). Helpful front desk staff.

If you want to save even more $$ the hotel next door, the Fitzgerald, or something is associated with the same company that owns The Andrews,, but I just love the Fino restaurant downstairs and the very generous breakfasts that outside your room..

Try Priceline. Don't be afraid. You can chose the exact area you want to stay in and the star level. I always try for the highest level of property.
I am staying on 12/1/04 for one night in SF. I got the Renaissance Stafford Court (considered 4 star deluxe) which is very near to Union Square for a song. My bid was accepted for $60.00 The rack rate on the website is $179.00
I use Priceline for most all my travel and have been pleasantly surprised. Last week I stayed for $35 at the Hyatt in Phoenix. It was a 5 star property. I think the website rack rate was around $200. No kidding...
I've stayed in resorts for less than $50 when using Priceline. It's the best! Why pay more? Hope this helps.

Someone recently posted on Fodors a terrible impression of The Andrews Hotel. Since my last visit was more than a year ago, I want to tame down my glowing review with the possibility that things could have changed recently.

Be careful. Priceline is a way to get a cheap room, but you must be aware of the limits: You cannot choose your hotel, just the price and the general neighborhood, and, most importantly for you, there is no guarantee that the room you get will hold three people. And, since if your bid is accepted, your credit card is billed instantly and there are no refunds, you cannot count on three people in a room. You will have to bid for two rooms, which is allowed, and then you will be looking for rooms under $75 each for the two.
The last time we were in SF, we had a nice Priceline room at the Hilton for $75 per night including taxes and fees, so it can be done.
Check biddingfortravel.com before you try using Priceline. They will save you from the pitfalls and errors in Priceline bidding.
