Western Hotel in Las Vegas?
I am meeting an old college friend and his wife in Las Vegas next month, and he's suggested I book a room at the Western on Freemont Street. I've never been but my friend says it's centrally located in downtown. When I called, I couldn't believe how inexpensive this place was. Does anyone know anything about the Western and its amenitites? I like a nice bargain and since I am not sleeping much, just assume save the money for drinks, food and gambling. Thank you!

don`t sleep w/the cockroaches..you can meet them somewhere....the Golden Nugget or stay on the strip and meet them.....there is NO law that says you have to stay w them..and in my experience don`t stay w/friends....meet and do your own thing if you want to remain that way...been there, done that...believe me......

Good lord! Either that cheapovegas site is slanderous or my "friend" and his wife are pulling my leg. The Western does not seem fit for human habitation! But I have to admit to being a spendthrift and loved that room rate at the Western and the Golden Nugget seems a bit rich for my taste. Any other suggestions on seriously discounted hotels in LV or other input on the Western?

Either your friend is a bit down on his luck and REALLY needs a bargain, or he is holding a grudge against you and isn't even gonna show up - just wants to ruin your trip.
Summer room rates in Las Vegas are a bargain. Check the rates at any of the other downtown hotels and choose the best bargain.
In order of best to just acceptable:
1. Golden Nugget
2. California
3. Fremont
4. Four Queens
5. Fitzgeralds
6. Las Vegas Club
Don't choose Main Street Station or Union Plaza unless they can guarantee you a quiet room...they are right on the railroad tracks.
Even better than the downtown hotels are the off strip bargains The Orleans, The Gold Coast and Palace Station. All these are a short drive to the Vegas Strip and have a free shuttle service. All three have good, moderately priced restaurants. And Palace Stations has $19 rooms many weeknights in the summer time.

Thanks for the heads up on the advice. After checking with my friend, he really IS staying at the Western and again argues that the room is nothing more than a place to shower. For $3 more a night, I'd rather be at Palace Stations. I am going at the end of next week so I will report on what I find...and I'll check their room out at the Western to see if it's as bad as you people report. Thanks.

Earl,
Palace Station is not a bad hotel at all. Many locals go there to gamble ( so you know the odds have to be a little better) and the restaurants there a quite good and inexpensive.
Everything is good at their Iron Horse cafe (especially the Chinese food--believe it or not) and the King crab legs in their seafood restaurant are ususally a great bargain.
Have fun,
DJ
