We're coming to Santa Fe...
...alas, unfortunately not for the GTG.
Still, we're going to spend an extended weekend in SF, June 30 to July 4, with our DC friends and I volunteered to find us a hotel. I'd love to get a two-bedroom suite but the only one I've found is at the Five Graces, which is absolutely gorgeous looking, but it's $900 a night! Just a titch over our budget.
The only other time we were in SF we stayed at the Inn of the Governors and liked it well enough. Our friends suggested La Fonda or the Inn of the Anasazi (also pretty pricey).
Do you have any suggestions? We'd like to be on or near the Plaza and while a two-bedroom suite would be fun, I'd settle for two separate rooms. I'd like three star or better (probably can't afford that fourth star though). We don't need a fancy dining room or a pool. In a perfect world, free parking would be nice.
Advice?

I've also been investigating 2-bedroom suites for a trip later this year, and found the main house at the Don Gaspar Inn (which gets good reviews) -- http://www.dongaspar.com/acc.html. Darn, though, just checked and looks like that weekend is booked, but might be worth calling them or checking back, just in case. Some of the other rooms have sofabeds and 1 bedroom, if that interests you at all. Good luck, I'd like to hear what you decide!

A couple of years ago, we stayed with 4 people in a wonderful suite (# 500) at La Fonda. However, this was before renovation and since then, La Fonda's rates have increased sharply.
So we searched for another option. And found it via VRBO.COM:
We rented (in fact, with 6 people) a most beautiful house (casita) in easy walking distance of the plaza. It was fully decorated in Santa Fe style and we felt like living in a museum. We enjoyed the kiva fireplace and the little garden. We saved thrice by renting the casita:
First, the rate was much lower than for multiple hotel rooms.
Second, we made our own drinks and some of the meals in our casita and saved a lot of $$$ compared to a hotel where you consume in the bar and restaurant at high prices.
Third, we had free parking in front of our casita whereas hotels charge $$$.
Here is the website:

We rented Casa Luna, which is a three-bedroom unit, but they also offer two-bedroom units.
www.vrbo.com gives you even more options.

I'd love to meet for drinks, Deb! I'll check with the travel pals and then we'll make some plans.
I've rented apartments and houses in the past (on other trips) but this time we want a hotel. Thanks for the suggestion, though, Echnaton.
Starrs, didn't you like La Fonda? Which Hilton -- I'll check it out.
Nobigdeal, let's share info as we get it.

Are you wanting to stay in the same unit? If so, I would go the vrbo rental route. There are lots of rentals in and around the plaza that would be perfect.
If you want your own space, I like:
Inn on the Alameda
El Farolito
Will you have a car? The new Auberge resort is gorgeous and in a beautiful setting just up the road from the plaza area called Encantado Resort.

I've visited and eaten there but haven't stayed there. It's gorgeous, though. I've seen deals lately on luxury travel sites so check that out if you are interested.

I'm not exactly sure of our budget (however, it's unfortunately not $900/night even divided by two couples).
What would you normally expect to pay for a room in a 3-star hotel? $250-ish? I haven't traveled in the US for a few years except for staying at my sister's place in Fla or renting an apartment in NY, so I've fallen out of touch with hotel rates.

If you're not room-sharing, look at the Hotel Santa Fe & Spa. It's about 6 blocks from the Plaza, near the Railroad Yards area. They have a shuttle (London cab) that will take you places and, more importantly, pick you up (they picked us up on a very very hot day at the top of Canyon Road). The rooms aren't large, but the place is very nice. Small pool, but good for an afternoon dip. It ought to fit your budget.

Inn of the Anasazi is very nice with a nice restaurant and cozy, popular bar area. We drop in there several times during our trips.
If you want to save $, next door to them is Hotel Plaza Real. I've stayed there several times and it's been nice and affordable for a great location. Rooms are nice, some with a fireplace and balcony out to the courtyard and parking is convenient. It was around $14/day, if my memory serves me correctly.
Free parking is available in places away from the plaza area (Sage Inn, for example). The parking garage on the plaza is $8-10/day (I think they went up recently to $10) so that is an option, too.
That's a busy time so availability may limit your choices.
