Well at first I was sure I was willing to drive but now I'm thinking I want to stay within 3 to 4 hours of my home. Those are both 6 hours or so. I have been to Savannah several times but never Charleston. Anymore suggestions within a few hours?

Charlotte? Depending on a time there is a good bit going on for shows, concerts. Lots of good eating. Basketball or hockey in town. Good museums and historic sites. Shopping.

But Charleston was also my first recommendation.

Louisville Ky.? Scads to see there. Google Shakertown, My Old Kentucky Home, and Berea. If you like music and the arts, Berea might be perfect.

Louisville is just about as far, assuming she lives somewhere like Johnson City. I don't think you have a lot of choices, Charlotte or Asheville seem the obvious choices. I presume you have been to Nashville since you wanted the SE direction. I'd go to Asheville.
