Hi.

I am visiting Boston on Thursday 28th April.
We are there for 4 nights staying in the Lenox.
Just wondering what the weather is like, we are from England and wondering what clothes to pack? is a jumper ok for daytime or will we need a overcoat?
Also, any info on the lenox and do you know the best way to get to Salem for the day? we dont drive!

A jacket should be fine but I'd still bring along a light scarf as it can be windy. Our little heat wave is over and we are back to normal temperatures -- which would be between 12C - 18C.

The Lenox is a lovely older hotel. The last time we were there, we had a view of the marathon finish line. It is located near all the shops and restaurants -- the Lindt chocolate shop is right on the same corner. If you are doing the breakfast package, they do a better job in the restaurant than they do for room service -- but that's true I believe for most hotels.

A jumper (sweater) will not be sufficient, as evening lows could go to 40, and rain is forecast for the weekend.

To get to Salem, take the subway system's Orange Line or Green Line to North Station and from there you get a Commuter Rail train. Complete routes and schedules are at www.mbta.com.

Well if you'd asked that question any time in the week before yesterday, the answer would have been sunny, clear blue sky, high 70-75F. Short sleeve shirt with a light jacket for morning or evening. A few days were even warmer.

This weekend it's supposed to return to spring weather - daytime highs in the low to mid 60's (F) ~15C. Maybe a bit cooler if it rains. Not unlike current London weather.

A jumper will be fine, unless you're planning, but be sure to bring an umbrella for days that rain.

Hmmm. Conflicting posts. I guess it depends on your cold tolerance. Since I'm in a heavy overcoat, hat, gloves all winter once the weather gets above freezing those all get packed away in my house. Good idea to have available several long sleeve layers including a light jacket.

I just got back from Boston and the above predictions were 90 % correct.
I did not take into consideration how much the wind could effect how cold I felt...So take a scarf...and a jacket--I don't think you will need an overcoat..
"Anonymous" advice about Salem is "right on" but be sure to check schedules as day of the week makes a big difference..
I loved my visit---I did mostly
Art and Museums and used the "T" extensively.(it is what they call their underground system.)
I found myself wondering what you are planning to do besides

A sweater alone will not be enough in the evenings. (Here a "jumper" is a sort of skirt/overall thing worn by school girls.) You should have a light jacket as well. An overcoat should not be necessary. (Weather is much closer to Scotland than London.)

nytraveler - my husband after 3 years of living here and numerous business trips still talks about wearing a 'jumper'. Funny looks from the neighbors until we explained

I know your pain - I used to have a boss from London. He refused - even after 5 years - to modify his language at all (amongst, betwixt, fortnight, carrier bag) - and also used to get lots of funny looks - esp when dealing with clients from the midwest. They thought he was SO pretentious.

Having grown up in Boston, the chilly weather, wind and rain can make for a most miserable day if you are not warm enough. I would suggest a lined raincoat as a better option than a jacket. That way if the weather warms up you can take out the lining and if the weather is as cool as we think it may be you will be glad for the extra warmth.

Does anyone else find it both hilarious and pitiful that this thread was stated over a month ago and then picked up again today as if no time at all had elapsed? Truly, we are having a miserable "spring" this year. But the lawns look great.

Take comfort in the fact that the forecasts are often wrong, even just 12 hours in advance. Also, the rain we've been having can be very localized -- I got just a tiny sprinkle at my house last Saturday, whereas my sister just 8 miles away had pouring rain for hours.

You were right on the money! The weather is so variable. The forecast changed overnight, too! So we checked the weather forecast every morning to decide what to wear & where to go for the day. We were lucky; it was in the high 60s most of the time, one warm day 76+ humidity. Got soak only one afternoon for a short walk between the T station & the hotel.


It was not bad after all. It was 40ish stormy the day before we got there. gt;)

Just to let you know how drastic the weather can be, my husband left for Boston yesterday afternoon on a business trip while the heat index in NY was 105 and the high in Boston was 89. Tonight he is freezing as the temperature is in the 40's and of course, he doesn't have a jacket!

Seetheworld--that's New England for you! Yesterday morning, I walked my son to school and got back home at 9:30. The temp was at least 85 degrees and extremely humid. At 10:05, I went back outside, and it was about 65 degrees! By the time the kids got out of school, it was in the upper 50s and all these poor kids were freezing in their shorts and sleeveless shirts!
