Suze- We loved the Hale Koa. My dad was retired Army (he passed away 2 years after our trip). He reserved a room a year in advance, and then asked to add a 2nd room to his reservation just 4 months before the trip. As long as it was family staying in the 2nd room, they allowed it. Anyway, we had ajoining rooms, partial ocean views and 3 star type accomodations. We had access to all the restaurants and the PX with our room key (no tax!). The food was all good, and very reasonable. My son was 12 then and he loved being on the beach. Even my DH who doesn't like Waikiki, loved the Hale Koa.

thank you for your comments and nice report. my folks want a family trip to Hawaii sometime in the future and it only just occured to me that this might work for us. my usual funky hotel choices would prove a little too adventurous for them -lol!
