I am thinking about a trip in November to the DC area and would like to stay in Virginia at a inexpensive hotel that either is within walking distance to a Metro stop or has free shuttles to the Metro stop. If anyone knows of any good ones, please let me know. Thanks.

If this is a pleasure trip, Virginia is a bit far from all the places you might want to visit.

Have you used Priceline before? You can get well-situated hotels for a much less price and November should not be that bad a month for bidding on Priceline.

We stay at the Embassy Suites in Alexandria . . it is across th3e street from the Metro station and gives easy access to anywhere in DC

The hotel is located in an area of Arlington called Crystal City and is within walking distance of both the Crystal City Metro stop and the Pentagon City Metro stop. They also offer free shuttles. The rate for mid-November ranges from $80 - $100.
As a resident of Arlington, I have not stayed in this hotel, but the price and location are excellent.

I've stayed in the two Marriotts at Crystal City many times and they're very convenient. Not sure they'd qualify as expensive, however.

There are a number of hotels in Crystal City that are convenient to the Metro. The Americana that longhorn55 mentions is probably the least-expensive among them, and an acquaintance who stayed there in summer 2009 was very happy with it. (I stayed in it myself a number of years ago.)

I stay at the Marriott in Falls Church. They have a free shuttle service to the Metro. It's located 7 miles from D.C. and 7 miles from Olde Towne Alexandria and 4 miles from Tyson's Corner.

Crystal City, Pentagon City, and Rosslyn are the areas in Northern Virginia with multiple hotels in walking distance to Metro stations that are 3 or 4 stops from the Mall. Most variety is in Crystal City, then Rosslyn and Pentagon City.

I love the Hyatt in Crystal City and it has very affordable prices on the weekends.

Lss1 makes a good point: especially outside tourist season (as during your planned November trip), many hotels aimed at business travelers in DC have significantly lower prices on weekends than on weekdays. The Crystal City hotels fall into this category, for sure.

we were able to get a rate of 70.00 per night recently at that Hyatt and it is a very nice hotel...they do have mandatory valet parking which runs about 15 per night i think

I just planned a trip for Sept and found 3 hotels that caught my eye, because I too wanted affordable pricing and wanted to be near a Metro stop. Check out the Hilton Garden Inn Courthouse in Arlington, Residence Inn Courthouse in Arlington, and Capitol Hill Suites. My parents stayed at Holiday Inn Arlington Ballston a couple times and had great things to say about that location too.

Courthouse and Ballston are also good locations, but the Orange line is impossibly crowded during the morning rush, so don't venture into Metro until after 9:30 if you choose lodging there.

I also found that hotel prices are highest on Tue & Weds nights (business clients).

My first choice for outside DC is Rosslyn, where there is Hyatt, Marriott, Best Western, Holiday Inn
Others near Courthouse fine too.

I know the Comfort Inns of "Landmark", "Vandorn" and "Springfield" all have free shuttles .. but note that the shuttle schedules may prevent you from some of your travels. Sometimes taking a public bus may offer better options than the "free" shuttle.

Consider the Red Roof Inn in DC near Chinatown/Gallery place

The three Comfort Inns that rb_traveler names are all a *long* way from downtown. The one at Van Dorn, in particular, has no restaurants, shops, or much of anything in walking distance. (They will, though, all have free parking, if that is valuable to you.) I wouldn't choose any of them if anything in Crystal City or Rosslyn (or the Red Roof in Chinatown) is within your budget.

I've stayed at the Best Wester Iwo Jima and at the Inn of Rosslyn. Neither are great, but they'll both do for a bed at night. They're both within walking distance of both the Rosslyn and Courthouse metro stations in Arlington, VA on the Orange line
