I agree with Charlottesville, one of my favorite towns, my late husband was born in Staunton and grew up in nearby Waynesboro, it is great to visit the grounds of University of Virginia, we ate lunch a couple of times at The Virginian across the street from UVA and Monticello is fairly close and really worthwhile. There is also James Madison's estate, Ash Lawn, did not see it though.
