Thanks to all for your suggestions and comments. I feel better knowing I won't be walking my family into some grungy motel. Clean, basic and no-frills will do just fine. And johncharles, thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you found the site helpful and can't believe I missed your trip report (especially considering how much time I spend on Fodors!) I definitely plan on looking it up as I always love reading about Boston!

If you can stand one more suggestion: I found myself in your position when making a last-minute 1-night trip to LV to meet some relatives that were going to be there. It was Oct. and there were several huge conventions, and not one room on the strip to be had.
I ended up at the Fairfield by Marriott, also one long block from the strip. It was under $100 and a clean, decent property.

San Remo think ROACHES! My sister stayed last year while I was at the Tropicana. She complained about everything at the San Remo.
Have you checked the Boardwalk or Casino royale? Not the best, but the availability and rates maybe o.k.
How about trying your luck with one of the travel sites such as Priceline?
