Vegas - Motel 6 or Super 8

Hi, does anyone have any experience with either of these motels in Vegas? My family and I have one night before driving to the Grand Canyon and Zion. My sister and I fly in from LA that evening, and my parents arrive from NY at 1 am. Unfortunately, because we arrive on July 3, we have two strikes against us -- Saturday check-in and a holiday weekend (to give you an idea, San Remo is $150 and Harrah's is $285 that night.) While I normally like to stay on the strip (Paris, MB, etc.), for such a short stay it's hard to justify spending so much money (we'll be at the Bellagio for 2 nights at the end of our trip when we can really enjoy it.) But since my sister and I will want to spend time on the strip that evening, I don't want to get too far away from the area. So I'm considering Motel 6 or Super 8, both $75. But it won't be worth it if they're complete dumps (which is what I've read about the Howard Johnson's.) Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We stayed at a Super 8 in LV a few years ago and it was very down market. Suggestion: Book a room you can cancel day of arrival and keep checking for reasonable rates at Monte Carlo and the other places you mentioned.

Try the Orleans. Often their rates aren't any more than a Motel 6 type place and it's a really nice place. Just a couple blocks west of the strip.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Unfortunately, after checking nearly every strip and slightly off-strip hotel, the best I can find is still the San Remo for $150 (Luxor a close second at $180. Sadly, the Orleans only has $350 rooms available.) With many places not allowing Sat check-in, I don't anticipate prices falling any. I plan on trying Priceline a little closer to the date, but would still like to book a back-up. So I guess now I just have to decide if it's worth it to pay twice as much for the San Remo as opposed to a motel-type place off strip...

Have you tried Priceline? Many people get pretty good deals for the Westin just off the strip. Biddingfortravel.com has full details and a bid assistance form for help.

How about Palace Station?

How about Downtown? It's a short cab ride to the strip and rooms are always much less. I have many memorable stays at both Lady Luck and the Four Queens. I did a check with Travelworm and Lady Luck has rooms for July 3 and 4 for $69.95 each night. I stayed in those garden rooms just last spring and it had just been redecorated. the rooms are large and you don't have far to walk to get out of the casino.

How about Barbary Coast? They have a listed rate of $95 for the 3rd. I didn't check availability however.

If I was in your position I would probably opt to stay downtown as here_today suggested or I would go out to Boulder Highway, Sams Town or others in that area.

Good Luck.

We found ourselves in the same situation for a week later, July 10th. A couple of months ago, a fellow foderite suggested San Remo for our Saturday night stay. It was a place we had never been to before, but from their website it looked nice and on line we got a rate of $64.00. Foolishly we procrastinated and a couple of weeks ago found a rate more than double. We ended up booking the Best Western McCarren for $75.00. Their website says they have a free shuttle to the strip. We've always had good luck with Best Western elsewhere. Just thought I'd share.

I would totally stay at the Barbary Coast. GREAT location and good reviews on tripadvisor. If you can get a $95 room there, go for it.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Unfortunately, most of the usual "less expensive" hotels just aren't an option (either don't allow Sat check-in or ridiculously expensive. Example - Barbary Coast $290!)

I'll check out the Best Western tip, Aliyanonie. Oh, and the only reason I wasn't considering downtown is because with the 3 separate cab rides we'll taking to or from the airport (my arrival, my parents' arrival, back to airport in the am to pick up rental car), I thought any room savings being downtown would end up being negated. Maybe I'm overestimating cab fare to and from? Oh well, guess I'll have to keep my Super 8 reservation for now and hope it's clean...

Here's my 2 cents.

We stayed at the Motel 6 on Tropicana for 2 nights. We were there for a concert, but we did the casino's too. The rooms were fine and it was really quiet. It's across the street from MGM - so you can go there for better food. I'd stay away from the San Remo -especially their buffet.
It's close to the airport too.
Have a good time!

Is there a reason you need to go back to the airport to pick up a car? There are car rentals all over Las Vegas. You can rent a car at the many of the hotels in downtown. The Four Queens has a Budget desk. The car fare downtown will only be a few dollars more, about $20, compare to maybe $12-15, depending on where you go on the strip.

Super 8 is just fine but make sure its the one on Koval Lane. Motel 6 on Tropicana is decent but the Super 8 is better. Comfort Inn on Paradise Road is newer...nothing special but close to the Hard Rock and easy from the airport. The worst thing about all of these is that they're kinda noisy...and on a busy Saturday night you might not have much luck finding a "quiet room".

tracys2cents May 29th, 2004 02:37 PM

Another suggestion would be Hawthorn Suites which is behind the Tropicana and a long long block to the strip, but you can walk it pretty easily. I see them for $78 at hotelkingdom.com. I think the 1 bedroom suites have a bedroom and a sofa-bed living room. An older, dull property but clean and well located.

We have almost the same scenario...flight arrives Vegas on a Saturday night at 10:40... so we planned to be up and out by noon to head to Grand Canyon. Also, we are 2 adults and 3 'kids' age 19,16, and 10. On the backside of the trip we have 3 nites at Paris Las Vegas, so where do we sleep that first night??

Tim_and_Liz May 29th, 2004 02:45 PM

luugis, we just got back from Bally's and the rooms were huge, great location, and the price was right. Check them out. I don't know what you are doing about a rental car but they have a Dollar rental place right inside Bally's and Paris, which are connected. Staying at Bally's and renting from Dollar, ending up at Paris could make a smooth trip.

i've stayed at the super 8 on koval lane many times. most recently in march. it's just fine. clean, comfortable beds, rooms are a decent size and it's just a short walk to the strip (5 minutes). it's located behind bally's. there is a small pool and hot tub but nothing fancy and in the parking lot. i wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

This is really refreshing after all those Bellagio vs. Venetian or Bellagio vs. (Fill in the blank) at Mandalay Bay threads.

In similar circumstances to yours, jv827, I had a positive experience similar to Gophish's at the Motel 6 on Tropicana. No frills, no troubles, no complaints. And I think it may have taken me less time to get to the strip in front of MGM from that room than it did from my room IN the MGM when I stayed there.

Also, jv827, if you never read my thanks to you in my Boston thread of six weeks ago for turning me on to that great Cinematreasures site, let me express it again here. It gave me just the type of info (and even helpful reminicenses from other posters) that I was looking for. I've also written a trip report since including discoveries that site helped me to make.

I stayed at the Motel 6 on Tropicana two years ago. Found it very convenient, couple of blocks off the strip (easy walking) and the ability to park right in front of your room to me is shall we say "priceless". The room was basic but clean.
Some years ago signed up with Super8 for their V.I.P. card. Haven't used it in some time so not sure if program is still in effect. Believe it got you 10% off.
