Upper West Side Hotel - moderate price
Looking for recommendations for a hotel during first week will be there mid-week) in February - moderate price.
Should I do Priceline? I've never done it and we're wondering if it's too chancy for two Seniors. Or would I be better off checking out the hotels directly to see if there are any good deals. Thanks.

If you decide to try priceline, go to www.BiddingForTravel.com and spend a couple of hours reading. That couple of hours you spend will tell you how to make an informed priceline bid. There really are no shortcuts around this.
It will also probably save you hundreds of dollars.
I would also shop Travelocity.com, Expedia.com, Hotels.com, and Quikbook.com for hotel deals.

Rate in Feb will be quite low on the hotel web sites themselves.
Don;t know what you mean by moderate - but try the following:
Lucerne - pretty and charming
Less expensive: Beacon, Excelsior, Belleclaire
Very modest: Newton (clean and basic - but most rooms have private baths)

If you go on Travelzoo.com this week, you will find a couple of excellent "specials" for Manhattan in Feb. and March. Put NEW York City in the search box when you get to the site, as it does update constantly.

We stayed at the Milburn back in 2004 and were very pleased. It wasn't fancy but was clean and quiet and in a great location (West 76th near Broadway). We were in a two room suite with a kitchenette and paid approximately $170/night. Reservation was made through their web site.

Here is another vote for the Milburn - great value for your $'s. Nice safe area, lots of good value places to eat and walking distance to the subway. We also booked directly from their web site www.milburnhotel.com
