TV/film sites in NYC
I know there are tours you can take that show you famous sites from TV shows and films - like the sex in the city tour and others. But I'm looking to find out where some of these sites are so I can do it on my own. I'm taking my 15 year old daughter down in a couple weeks and she's indicated it would be fun to see some of the places she sees on TV - Friends, Sex and the city, etc. I know NY pretty well so if I just had street adresses I could find them. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Friends was mainly filmed on a back lot in California so that will not help you. Only a few of the exterior shots ever made it to TV and the fountain in the opening credits is a prop; it doesn't exist in NYC.
I would watch a couple of episodes of SATC and jot down places and hunt them down on your trip.
A couple to start: Cupcake Cafe, Manolo Blahnik, Balthazar, and Prada in Soho (not Midtown).
Carrie lived on the UES, Charlotte UES/UMidtown on Park, Miranda UWS, and Samantha UES then the Meatpacking District.

A few years ago I was in NY and I wanted to visit the Soup Kitchen from the "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld. It wasn't filmed there, but I still wanted to go there for lunch. We found the Soup Kitchen, and the place was closed for rennovation. So NO SOUP FOR ME!!
It's probably open again by now. If you're interested, it's at 259A West 55th Street, near 8th Avenue.

I personally can't stand Friend of a Farmer (find the faux country thing revolting and the food overrated) but the eternal lines at brunch indciate that most disagree. But I agree that it would be a good stop, as Pete's Tavern (where Miranda proposed to Steve) is across the street. 18th and Irving.

Actually, I feel exactly the same way about Friend of a Farmer, it's like faux Vermont comes to Manhattan. Their omelettes are good, but not better than elsewhere. Pete's Tavern is very olde New York, actually kinda dumpy, but tables outside in good weather. Food is so-so, I generally stick to the burgers. With reference to Friend of a Farmer which is mid-block, Pete's Tavern is at the next corner rather than literally just across the street.
Did you (isabel) ever watch "Felicity"?
NYU's main campus isn't far from Irving Place.

I've never watched "Felicity" but I think my daughter has, so that's a good suggestion to go to NYU.
I was mostly looking for really recognizable places - like the building Grace works in on "Will & Grace". In fact, that's what started this whole idea. Last year my son moved to NY and got his first job. I went down to see him and he told me to meet him outside his office and give me the address. When I got there I immediately recognized it. When I came home and told the rest of the family they thought it was really cool and Maggie (my daughter) has wanted to go see it. And since she seems to watch Friends and SATC reruns all the time, I thought taking her by Carrie's stoop or Monica's apartment would be fun. I suppose I could just take her by places that look like them, but if I knew where they were actually shot it would be better.
Keep the suggestions coming, I appreciate it.

The building that Grace works in on Will & Grace is the Puck Building on Houston and something. Also, if she is a Sarah Michelle Gellar fan, scenes from Simply Irresistable were shot at Bendels and the farmers market in Union Square. Outdoor tables at Pastis are in one episode of Sex and also the Boathouse pier and Bethesda fountain for that great shot of Carrie & Big falling into the lake in Central Park.

i think carrie "lived" on E 73rd st between lex and 3rd. have you tried doing a search on the internet to see if someone has already mapped it all out?
when carrie tells miranda about aiden--"i find him to be very cute"--they are eating cupcakes in front of magnolia bakery. and i know that the diner scenes were all filmed on a set.
i don't think the friends' building actually exists. when you watch it, see if you can tell what the cross streets are--there is a street sign in the shot. then check out that corner.
