TuTu'Tun Lodge - recent reports?

Finding out all these places are really quite expensive along the Coast!! Any recent reports on this Lodge? Have read positive reviews in books, but seen no details on this Board. Only brief references to it here.

Considering two nights here, so would *really* like to know if it's 'worth it', to begin with, but also, if it is...
is a regular, lower level room w/2 beds good enough, or does one *really* have to splurge big-time here, to see what's so special about it? (Can't tell from the Inn's website...can't see much of the rooms, nor its setting. So, not sure what's so unique here. The hills look kind of treeless & the river wide here. Perhaps just not the best photos?)

There's a HUGE price difference between the standard rooms & those, w/fireplace or hot tubs, upstairs...which have better views, I guess. Almost $100! Anyone stayed here recently, or if not recently, are big fans (or not) of the Tu Tu'Tun? *Please* share reviews! Would you also recommend getting their 'meal plan'? Thanks.

I went there in June 2003 to see what I was missing and it wasn't much. I can't fathom all the hoopla about this place. It was small, close to other buildings with not much to do. It had a nice, small pool next to the river with only one lady sitting in the sun. The river was wide with a rocky bottom so you wouldn't want to wade out. The scenery is on the dry side reminding me of California. The hiking was not nearly as nice as the redwood areas of Brookings or the coastal areas of Bandon.

We arrived at lunch and were told that they don't serve lunch except to their guests by special advanced request only. No one was eating lunch in the dining room and the lady said that usually no one requests lunch because they serve a huge breakfast. At dinner, there is only one main course served so you'd better check to see that you like it or book a meal in town. The hotel is quite a drive from town and too remote to come and go easily. I didn't see the rooms but the price is so high that I can't imagine they're worth it particularly since the prices have doubled in the past few years and the buildings and balconies looked small.

Interestingly, they were full when I tried to book but the Lodge referred me to a fabulous bed and breakfast right on the ocean in Gold Beach. It's called the Rogue Reef Inn and we loved our stay there. The sunset over the water was magnificent and there are several great restaurants in town (the Nor'Wester and Chives).

All in all, I'd stay in Gold Beach for only one day. Spend more time in Brookings or Bandon.

I agree with "JeanetteC"
i do not understand all the raves about this place--especially the prices !!!although the food was good.Maybe it is popular for the more rustic type of surroundings
We decided to stay a shorter time and went to Bandon, which i really like.--great beach for walking--and "cute" little cheese factory and friendly people..
Good luck..

I've researched this place before and simply could not convince myself that I'd like it enough to justify the cost.
I'm not sure where all the hype comes from, but somehow I've concluded that there is indeed plenty of hype.

Spent three days there last week. Had one of the large suites with kitchen and living room. It is a bit expensive, but the service and the rooms are great...perhaps the best on the Oregon Coast. Not all that far from hwy 101. The meals were good, but not spectacular, but we couldn't find a better place to eat in the area. And the jet boats will pick you up at the dock. Give it a try (if you can get in) ..there's a reason so many people keep coming back.

We stayed there for 2 nights almost 10 years ago (yikes!) and I loved it. We had an upper floor room with fireplace and hot tub. The place had been fairly recently refurbished and everything in the room was comfy--including the two armchairs--and lovely. We had a excellent meal of salmon grilled over applewood (I beliver) chips. That being said, we stayed there to do the Rogue River jet boats. I'm not sure there's a whole lot else, but the place itself remains one of the nicest I've stayed at.

We stayed at the Tu Tu Tun lodge in mid October and found the experience first rate. The food was wonderful (and plentiful), the setting on the Rouge spectacular, and most importantly, the hospitality unbeatable. Some of the small things; loaner of warm jackets for the jeb boat ride, binoculars, always being called by name, not having to sign for drinks or meals. I though the place was really first class, cannot recommend it more. Randy
