If the boardwalk were a road, the Taj is on one side of the street while the beach is on the other side.
If the weather is hot, you can walk to the Showboat while being completely indoors (just look for the coridor).
Be sure to go to the marina area and check out the new casino hotel that just opened there.

It's right on the Boadwalk. I second Bo's recommendation to check out the new casino on the Marina called the Borgata. The last time I was in AC it was not open, but it did look impressive from the outside.
Also I would recommend going to the Harrahs for lunch. There's a nice casual restaurant (Reflections Cafe) which overlooks the Marina.

As a followup, I had a great time, won big, and left the hotel for 5 minutes to walk out on the steel pier.
What I saw of AC from the Airport to the Taj Mahal was pretty. Lush, green, and a beautiful salt marsh.
The fireworks/light show was pretty pathetic. We went to a VIP cocktail reception with supposedly the best view in town of the display. You couldn't see anything because the wind was blowing so hard and then the area filled up with smoke.
I would go back again on another freebie.
