Transport from Newark Liberty to Manhattan and back?

Just wanted to start out by saying you guys are great and have been a ton of help with all the info so far. THANKS EVERYONE!!!

I am staying at Newark Liberty for 8 days and I am in need of the best way to get back and forth to Manhattan everyday im there. Price is a concern so the best and cheapest way would be great.

Thanks folks and have a great one, mscmkr

WHY are you staying at Newark Liberty for 8 days?? This is not a good place to stay to visit NYC. Newark is a good 1 hr. away from Manhattan and fastest transportation by Express buses or train typically cost $12-15 each way adding $200+ to your expenses. The only reason to do this would be if you were attending a conference at the airport or the hotel and then intended on going into Manhattan when you weren't working.

If it was done to save money, there are other NJ hotels (like those in Jersey City near a PATH train, the Sheraton in Weehawken near the ferry or even some of the hotels in Secaucus and East Rutherford near the Meadowlands which are near bus service) that are much closer to Manhattan that would be better options and cost less for transportation. If you'd like to consider other options, the Hyatt Regency Jersey City and the Doubletree Club Jersey City are near a PATH train stop (like a subway) that costs $1.75/ride. They are both Priceline 3* hotels and people regularly win them for under $100/night although it's more difficult for an 8 night stay.

But to answer your question, it probably depends on which hotel you're at, since they're not all in the same place. Your hotel website probably has directions on getting in/out of Manhattan. Njtransit.com has a trip planner that may also answer your question. If you can get to Newark Penn station from the hotel, from there you can take the PATH train. Here's the PATH map

I agree with McLaurie 100%. However, if you are staying at an airport hotel, most all of them have a hotel shuttle that will take you to Newark Penn Station. From there you take NJ Transit into Penn Station NY - 15$ each way. You are confined to the NJ Transit train schedules, so I suggest you look it up on the website and have it handy. It's easy, yes, but time consuming.

The PATH train from Newark is the least expensive but most time consuming option. You would still have to shuttle from your hotel to Newark Penn staion to catch the PATH train.
Can't you change your hotel options?

Not that this is a good setup, but FYI if you take the NJ Transit trains from Newark Penn Station rather than from the Newark Airport terminals, the fare is a few dollars less than th $15 quoted When going to/from the airport itself , there is actually a supplement (used to be $5) that supports the "free" monorail part of the Airtrain

I cant change my hotel due to booking through Expedia. I have already changed my plans once and of course if i change them again I will pay way to much in fees. I had booked a hostel on the upper west side but read about 100 reviews on how horrible the hostels are so I changed it to the Sheraton by Newark Liberty. I am only paying $60 a night for 8 nights. My whole trip went up only $70 total when I changed from the hostel to the Sheraton. The price is what drew me there.

This is going to be my first trip to New York and just being there is enough for me. If the trip back and forth takes me a while its not going to kill me. Staying in a dirty room and hotel with a shared bathroom I feel is much worse and thats all I would be able to afford in Manhattan.

Thanks, mscmkr

Which Sheraton Hotel are you at? The one across from the airport on Frontage Road or the one on Spring St in Elizabeth.
The reason I say this it will affect where the hotel shuttle takes you as I think the one on Frontage Road only goes to the airport tram drop off. But I believe the one on Spring St will take you to Newark Penn station
There is a regular NJ Transit Bus #40 that serves Newark Airport and Newark Penn Station but does not offer late night service that you can use to by pass the expensive airtrain/ NJ transit connection or you can avail yourself of direct Newark airport Port Authority Bus.

Here is the schedule for the #40. I see it indeed stops on Frontage Rd in front of the Sheraton Hotel. So if this is your hotel you have a bus line to go with it.

The only problem is - that depending on time of day it can easily take 1.5 hours - or even more - from Newark into the city by bus. Anywhere near rush hours can be even worse.

Isn;t there any way you can stay either in Manhattan or nearby Jersey?

Three hours a day is a lot to waste.
