Airtrain or bus, the cost for our family to travel from Newark Airport to Manhattan and back is $88 ($11 each way). Surely, there is a more inexpensive way to do this? Help!

Nope--the problem is that Newark is in another state so you can't get away with taking local public transportation such as a subway. By the way, a cab or car service will cost about $40-50 each way, so for almost the same money you can travel in a bit more comfort and save some time.
(and in case you're counting your pennies, Airtrain is actually $11.55 each way, though you can do a connection with the PATH train instead of using NJ Transit the whole way, and save about $3 per trip...)

Hi Jim,

Welcome to NYC.

Actually there is a cheap way now, there is a new train that goes from Newark to Penn Station in NJ, and you can get the Path train from there into Manhattan to several places depending on where you are staying. I think the last stop is 34th St. and 6th Ave. Ther price pp should be around $4.

Have a great time while you are here.

The above train RT (going thru Newark Penn Station) runs about $8/pp, and also requires a transfer in addition to the train from Newark Airport to Newark Penn staion (3 different trains).

Really not a convenient alternative, especially for the price AND given you have a car available to get you closer to NYC before taking mass transit.

The nice thing about the train is that you don't have to fight the traffic into Manhattan. The bad thing about the train is that you have to transfer to the metro or to a taxi to get to your hotel (unless your hotel is near 34th street).

We used a van service from Manhattan to the airport for 4 adults and lots of luggage. It cost $50 including tip.

Either way, NYC is expensive, so get used to it!

Jim: Accept the fact that the New York Metropolitan area is expensive. We always factor in at least $100 (2 people) roundtrip to and from the airport and we live here. Considering you probably will be spending mucho dinero to fly 4 people into New York and hotel, meals, souvenirs, admissions, etc., etc., spring for the bucks and take a taxi or car service. The convenience of door to door drop off is well worth avoiding the hassle for 4 people. Enjoy and bring a full wallet.

If you want to pay the lowest price, and are less concerned about how long it might take, take the regular New Jersey Transit bus to the Newark Train Station. (There are two locals buses that run to/from the airport.)

From the Newark train station, take the PATH train to one of several stops on the West Side, below 34th St.

The all-in fare is probably between $4 and $5 pp, each way.

Jim,

It's true that NYC is expensive, but don't worry, there are cheap(er) ways to do everything if you are flexible and plan ahead, which you are doing.

One other option, if you're hotel plans aren't set (don't' know how you chose a hotel by the airport) is a variety of budget hotels in the Secaucus/Rutherford area of NJ. Rooms on priceline often range $30-$50/nite (maybe $80-$120 if booked conventionally) and there are NJ transit busses at the door of many of these hotels which go directly into NYC in about 15-20 minutes, at a cost of about $2/pp.

I strongly suggest you look into a car or van service. You won't have to schlep luggage all over creation taking trains and transferring, etc. And while traffic is what it is, you won't be driving. And, when you pay the driver, you'll feel you got your money's worth.
