After making arrangements for a week in D.C., I was able to squeeze two days in NYC. The thing is, I want to maximize my limited time in NY. There is a tour I want to take that starts at 9:00 a.m. the first day I arrive. I don't have the train schedule, but is there a train that leaves D.C. early enough to get there in time? Then, once I arrive, I have to leave my suitcase somewhere. It seems like it would take a lot of time to get it to my B&B and then get back to the tour. Are there any lockers at the train station or is that a thing of the past? Any suggestions?

Very unlikely, but just check the Amtrak schedule; abbreviation for Washington is WAS and New York is NYP, which is Penn Station in midtown.

There are no lockers anymore, though there is a place for Amtrak passengers to check bags in DC, but I don't know about NYC.

If you check schedules on http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/Conten...mtrak/HomePage you will see that it is possible to get from DC to NY that early, but do you really want to be getting on a train at 4 AM? And are you sure the B&B will let you leave your bags prior to checking in while you take your tour? How about heading to NYC the night before?

I agree with Seamus. Find out how late you can check into your B&B. And 8pm train will get you into Manhattan by 11;15.

The problem is - i'm trying to save some $$ -- I know I know - NYC is not the place to go on the cheap but the hotels are expensive and just seemed like a good idea to not waste the morning riding on the train. - I don't mind getting up early. The main problem is the luggage

Can you take the tour at another time?

There is a luggage check room in Penn Station - but it can be used only by people with Amtrak tickets. (i don;t know if they have to be for that day - or waht time it opens).

I would check the Amtrak web site.

There is no other place in Manhattan to check luggage - unless you can con a nearby hotel into taking it- they may or may not.

Right across the street from Penn Station is the Pennsylvania Hotel, you can check the bag at the bell stand there and head out for your tour.

I just did the train trip from DC last week and it's very easy and comfortable, and you can sleep all the way up.

I can't fathom that even the Hotel Pennsylvania will just let random people check luggage there. I know Amtrak has (or used to have) a luggage check, which you can likely use with your ticket from DC. I'd call Amtrak to verify

I'm not sure if you were dead set against flying but you might have better luck on Jet Blue. I'm not sure how much your amtrak fare is but often the train ride isn't much cheaper. Jet Blue fares between Dulles and JFK-NEW York start around $50 one way; so about $120 with taxes round trip.
They have a 6 am flight that will get you into New York at 7:20. Not sure where your B&B is though. Could be a scramble to make that tour.
Anyway, just thought this might be something to consider.
